ESPN NCAA College Hoops question

Post by hrudey32 »

i think someone answered this before but just want to make sure before i go pick this up.....in season mode can you take the players that they have created and rated (for example PG #2, C#42, SF #32) for UNC and change them to (Felton, May and McCants) and have them in game with the correct names....also if a common name is used will the announcers call their name such as Williams or Scott?

going to probably pick this up....everyone seems to recommend this over March Madness...any last tips or suggestions? thanks fellas!

Yes you can.
You can only name up to 144 teams yourself for the XBox version then after that any names you submit will not register for some reason.
So if you plan on naming them all yourself make sure you do the big conferences first then after 144 teams, I would try to find the closest players name in the database to name the others.
Do you have Action Replay? There are already rosters that out there with all the teams. If not you could always send me or another member your memory card and we could copy it over for you. Or I could mail you out my Action Replay memory card.

I wont be using my Action Replay until baseball season which is why I would noit miss it for a couple weeks.
Buy it... Though I enjoy the flow of ID 2004 more I love the college game and ESPN for me was far superior to MM. Plus they dropped the price and new it is only $29.99 at EB and gamestop.

It would be perfect in your case since you are not on Live (for pro rosters). Everyone has to have it for the college rosters.

Simple process you have a little docking station which goes to the back of your computer via a USB port. You also get a memory card (which works just like the MS one) and you download files (either through the software provided or from the internet site www.codejunkies.com to the memory card. You then remove the mem card and put it in your controller. Go to memory and then move to memory card, and copy over.

hrudey32, the AR is all you need. It comes with a little memory card. As for rosters, I usually check operationsports for them.

Make sure and read the FAQ´s over in the OS forum (Roster Files) on how to use the action reply. It covers everything you need and more.

I was unable to get the AR memory card to work with large files (like rosters) and I even took the AR back and got another one. Same problem.

It worked fine with a Microsoft official memory card. I found out that others had this problem as well when I read the FAQ at OS referred to in the post above.

I bought College Hoops XBox (used) last night at EB for $26.99. I also got Ghost Recon, Shenmu 2, for the XBox, and NBA Street for the PS2 in AB´s buy 2 get 1 free promotion. The whole lot came to $63, after tax... not bad.

Anyway, my main purchase of interest was College Hoops (the others are for my boys, although I´ll get some use out of NBA Street ).

I´m not sure what to think of it at this point. Yes, it´s decidely better than the dreadful demo I played. The atmosphere, play-by-play, sound effects, cut scenes, etc. really elevate the game. It doesn´t play a bad game of basketball, but something about it just feels... I don´t know... "cheap". The animations are passable, although there´s a little jitteriness to them at times. I think the biggest problem is the was body contact is handled. The players feel like spiders rubbing together.

I´ve only played one game, after customizing some of the Duke roster (heck, I don´t even know but 6 names from memory on this year´s team... shows where my head´s been the last 4 months!). It was cool to hear J.J. Redic and Chris Duhon´s names called.

The game just doesn´t have the Cadillac feel to it that Inside Drive 2004 has, but I´d say it´s worth the $26 I paid for it. I so strongly prefer college basketball to pro anyway that I can deal with the lagging gameplay engine.

i hear ya dude..i got it last nite and i think i just need to get used to all the controls. but at first i admit that i thought March Madness, that no one recommended, played smoother. after about three games i was seeing why i THINK Hoops is better but i´m not sure yet...it does play sorta jitterish.....i guess i need to tweak with some sliders.....i like the cameras in both games and it is cool to hear Rashas McCants being called as well as Raymond Felton......i don´t play a ton of Hoops games so my judgement of a hoops game isn´t as good as some you guys who are more knowledgable on the games.

i just got to get more time in with it....

i am correct in saying that most of you recommended College Hoops over March Madness, right? it probably is better but it didn´t jump out at me being much better at first...maybe with a few more games it will become evident.

one thing i had problems with was trying to guard my man.....i switch to him and then usually run by him or he runs by me....is there a way to get him in the sorta crouching guarding position?

thanks fella!! looking forward to playing some this weekend!!

and yeah, i created all the UNC players!

[ This message was edited by: hrudey32 on 30-01-2004 07:03 ]

There have been some good threads on the subject over the past couple months. I am probably in the minority and prefer March Madness, but the bottom line is both games are broken IMO if you are looking for realism. If you play March Madness you give up offensive rebounds, a decent franchise mode, and the rosters are inaccurate. If you prefer CH you had better be able to accept the fact that the press is nothing more than a nuisance and it is hard to get realistic free throw attempts even with the sliders maxxed.

I think you can have fun with either title. Give Jistic´s sliders a shot. They are good. Just give yourself a couple boosts on the FG% of other areas if they are too hard for you starting out.

[ This message was edited by: Leebo33 on 30-01-2004 08:02 ]
I believe the Left Trigger on the Xbox version puts the defender in a crouch position and prevents the offensive player from just running by him.

yeah, seems like thats right...i was just having problems defending....also passing.....w/o using icon passing that passing didn´t always seem to go where i intended....you guys have any problems with that...again...its probably just a learning curve for me...free throw shooting is hard as hell though...

still alot i like about the game though! had a good time last night...

I´m not sure if it is the same in College Hoops as it is in ESPN NBA, but double-tapping the passing button or passing icon results in a "lead pass" that hits the player on the run.

I definitely need to work with the sliders and see where that gets me. And Lord help me when I get put on the friggin´ free throw line - I´m lucky to draw iron, let alone sink it. There´s no way I would take my (cough)... *game* online right now to play anyone - I flat out suck at this game. hrudey32 you´re right, this game has an incredibly intricate control scheme; I can see where I might be able to do myself some good on D by being able to use isomotion properly. But heck, I find myself doing crossovers when I mean to shoot, so that´s a ways up the learning curve for me - I don´t know if I´ll ever get the hang of that.

One more question for you guys who´ve played this for a while. Is it my imagination or are Mike Patrick´s and Jay Bilas´ voice samples not a bit raspy? I thought my speakers were messed up at first, but everything else is okay. I´m guessing they used a low sample rate and it resulted in lower quality audio.

i would get destroyed if i played anyone right now....it would be sad....i keep looking for someone to check!! oh well...wrong sport....i will get it, hopefully....i did execute an awesome Felton to McCants alley-oop slam that looked incredibly like the real thing!

but what the hell is the trick with the free throws? the manual is sketchy.....i have hit 1 in 4 games.....it rings true for Jackie Manual, poor guy, but when Felton comes up to the line and i clunk it it kinda sucks....

do you guys use icon passing?

I only use icon passing, I don´t think I´ve ever attempted a pass without using icon. I think the black button, maybe white, is the lead pass button. Basically, after a rebound, you can start a fast break by hitting this button. It passes the ball to the closest guy to the basket.
Free throws will come around, I sucked at first, but give it some more time and you will hit them with ease.

you pull the L/R trigger close in then stop the ball in the center of it? is that right? weird way of doing it...in that aspect i do like MM better.....but looking forward to getting some SH in this weekend!

You got it. Try to form a "circle" by bringing in both the L and R. It gives a little so it doesn´t have to be a complete circle and the ball doesn´t exactly have to be in the center of it.
