TW2003 PS2

Post by JasonC »

Has anyone seen this yet? I´m trying to decide whether to ask for the PC or PS2 version for Christmas. As far as my PC goes: the old grey mare she ain´t what she used to be. But I´m a bit skeptical of doing TrueSwing with the analog stick on the PS2.

<BR>Anyone have any opinions?

<BR>Thanks,

I like TW 2002 PS2 for multiplayer play. It´s arcadish for sure, but it has enough sim elements thrown in to keep me interested. The Tiger Challenge is fun for a while, but it gets too extreme in the later stages. The analog swing works pretty well for tee and approach shots, but it´s brain dead when it comes to putting. All putts are hit with 100% stroke! Where´s the feel in that!?
<BR>
<BR>I´m giving you these examples from the 2002 version because I´m told it´s very similar to the 2003 version in play mechanics. The 2003 version does have 72 hole tournments (2002 only had 36 hole tournments), but I still haven´t had anyone tell me whether you can play the 72 hole tournaments with an AI player or not, or whether there´s a cut after 36 holes.

The 2002 PS2 version was awesome, and the analog swing works very well. I will have the 2003 version tomorrow when I pick it up at the office. I say get the PS2 version, but then again, I am biased towards consoles. <IMG SRC="images/forum/icons/icon_wink.gif">

After having played a few rounds with Tiger Woods 2003 on PS2, I´d have to say that it has a lot more long term potential than did TW 2002. I played a lot of 2002 and became quite comfortable with the swing controls and could post scores in the -10 to -15 range with ease. The only round I played outside of the Tiger Challenge (which is match play and therefore hard to estimate a score) I shot a 74, finding it difficult to shoot lights out golf immediately. Part of it might have to do with the fact my golfer isn´t maxed out as it is in 2002, but I´ve also had my share of mis-hits which I very rarely experienced in 2002.
<BR>
<BR>One feature I´ve found very intriguing is that during the Tiger Challenge, you may choose to place a side wager using your collected earnings. It limits the amount that you can bet, but the maximum seems to be increasing the further your challenges go. I really like the feature because it makes you think twice before using all of your money on attributes following your rounds. There are also signs that you can place other side bets, but I haven´t encountered where to make these wagers yet.
<BR>
<BR>As others have mentioned, you can play a 72 hole tournament, something you couldn´t do in 2002. I have yet to play in a 72-hole tournament yet (only had the game a couple of days) but I´m sure I´ll be playing in my share of them. It will take me back to the old days of PGA ´93 on the Sega Genesis. You do play against actual PGA pros and you are given the option of playing with a computer controlled pro, unlike 2002.
<BR>
<BR>These are preliminary views I´ve had of the game. I will include more views as I am able to squeeze in some more rounds. I will say that I am encouraged that it looks like there will be more long term value in this game than 2002.
<BR>
<BR>P.S. I haven´t gone on-line with the PS2 yet, so I can´t vouch for that aspect of the game.

<BR>Good stuff CitiWolves, please share your impressions of the 72 hole tournament play once you´ve had a chance to try that out.

A quick update. I attempted to play a 72 hole tournament for the good of the forum, but I was unfortunately unable to make the cut. A couple of observataions, however...
<BR>
<BR>My skills from TW 2002 have really been nullified by building a new character. I shot a 2-over par 74 in the first round and followed with a 3-over par 75. The 74 in the first round was despite back to back eagles on the front night. One thing I will say is that it seems easier to sink approaches in 2003 than it was in 2002. Even without use of the hellacious spin feature, I´ve had about three hole-in-ones during Tiger Challenge matches as well as during a tournament. Don´t know quite what to attest it to, but it seems odd. I really don´t think I´m going to be able to make a cut until I make it further through the Tiger Challenge and beef up my attributes a bit. I played with Notah Begay, who was one stroke off the lead after the first round but fell off the pace during the second round.
<BR>
<BR>Observing the leaderboard, I noticed that, much like TW2002, the computer players seem to post up monster scores during the beginning of their rounds. For example, Tiger was -5 after just 6 holes in the first round. While we all know the real Tiger is likely capable of this, it is not likely that there will be four players right on his tail (pardon the pun) after only having played 5-8 holes respectively. They tend to fall off during their back nines and the leader is usually shooting about -8/-9 for the round. Also taking a bit of the realism out of it was that my +2 put me 126th out of approximately 128 players in the field. I know +2 is far from a good round, but I don´t think it is THAT bad. What happened to John Daly´s 82?
<BR>
<BR>Also on approaches, one thing I´ve gotten a kick out of is a new view EA has added to the console versions (haven´t played the PC, so maybe it is there too). During approach shots, a view of your player´s face is shown eyeing down the shot, a la a TV presentation. Not a big gameplay feature, but I think it adds to the television presentation ambience.
<BR>
<BR>I´ll continue adding observations as I play more. I´m splitting time between this, NBA Live 2003, while still playing some Madden and NCAA 2003, so I obviously have my work cut out. How did Bo and Deion manage playing all those sports for so long?

Thanks for the info on the 72 hole tournament CityWolves. So you were +5 and didn´t make the cut? That sounds reasonable for an average PGA tour event. It´s interesting that the game is apparently difficult enough to put you at that position, although I´m a little concerned about some sort of contrived difficulty being there, based on your eagle production.
<BR>
<BR>Were you playing with a computer player? If not, did you have the option of doing so? I hope you´ll be playing another 72 hole tournament and make the cut. I´d like to hear more about what happens, especially if you are able to play with an AI player. For example, if you make the cut and he doesn´t, do you get paired with another AI player for the final 36?
<BR>
<BR>I hope to be playing TW 2003 myself fairly soon, but it may be more than a week before I can do so.

I did play with a computer player (Notah Begay). Don´t know yet if you get paired with another computer player, but I´m guessing no. Would seem that if you were to get paired with someone, odds are in the field of almost 130 that it would be a player not available in the game... I´ll keep you posted.
