All right, all you DVR/TiVo pimps, my local TimeWarner has a deal where you can try DVR service for a month for free before deciding whether to keep it.

So why not -- what the hell? I´m getting my DVR installed Thursday and will see if the TV Red Sea parts.

I´m holding off on getting a dish until at least April. TimeWarner´s local sports channel is the exclusive telecaster of around 10 Syracuse basketball games this season, and my wife and I don´t want to miss those.

Plus I have a sneaky suspicion that an installer might not be willing to do as quality of a job on a snow-covered roof in 10-degree temperatures as he might when it´s sunny and 60 in late April. Paranoid, but it´s a legit concern with me.

Take care,

Well, let us know how it turns out. We´ll just see if the theory about not really appreciating the power of a DVR until you´ve got one holds true.

I agree with you about the Dish installation delay...that´s another great thing about So. Cal...we don´t exactly have those concerns. Our installers just have to worry about the roof caving in when we have that huge 10.0 earthquake someday.

The only thing about those DVRs rolled out by the cable companies is that they´re pretty generic or bare when it comes to the interface.

They may lack some niceties like dual tuners or things like Season Passes. The Tivo recommendations I don´t use but I know a lot of people are into them.

But the price is hard to beat, as there´s no up-front costs and the monthly service fee seems reasonable (even if the program guide and features aren´t nearly as nice).

I may try an HDTV DVR from Comcast pretty soon but only because I get HBO and Showtime in HD for free and because the HD Tivo is suppose to be $1000 when it comes out in March.

PK:

I have been a longtime DVR user. I started out with a Tivo -- for which I had numerous mechanical problems (i.e. the modem repeatedly burned out and the hard drive crashed once) and then moved onto a Replay TV, which I generally liked, though the interface was more rudimentary and the conflict resolution was subpar. Then the hard drive was corrupted when it was upgrading to a new version of the system software.

I then received the Time Warner DVR, which I have to say I really like. Although the interface is very basic, and some of the refinements of the other brands are missing, I have to say I actually prefer this unit for one important reason -- the Time Warner DVR lets you record two live programs at once. None of the others -- except some of the satellite Tivos -- let you do that.

For me, I can care less about the thumbs up mentality of Tivo or the commercial advance feature of the Replay TV (though I liked it). I have no problem going through the program guide and selecting the shows I want to record. You should be very pleased.

i had tivo for a little over a year

i now have DVR thats offered by my local digital cable company Brighthouse

i find them too be equal across the board in what one has too offer over the other

and as much as i thought i would never enjoy the DVR as much as i had Tivo when i had it

i find that i actually much prefer it......mine offers recording two programs at the same time which is fantastic on weekends when i work and say 2 games are playing on two different networks at the sametime it also has a few other little things that have won me over

but bottom line its apples n oranges as both are fantastic in there own way......

if forced too give up gaming consoles or dvr
Whoa whoa whoa...slow down there buddy. Just go back to a damn VCR, even though they are quite archaic after you play with a DVR/Tivo. I think you just jumped off the deep end bro and I´m not sure a lot of guys are following you.
I´m a long-time Tivo user, and I would NEVER go back to using a VCR. Compared to DVRs, the image quality, slow search speed, and programming interface just doesn´t cut it anymore.

In my house, the VCR has gone to "analog heaven" along with my audio cassette tapes...they have become obsolete to me the moment I entered the 21st century.

I wouldn´t necessarily say I would give up gaming before giving up a DVR but I use the DVR every day whereas I don´t necessarily play games every day.

lol///no im serious

i literally use it daily considering the hours i work or my son uses it or christine

with the crazy hours i work and the amount it allows me too remain an advid sports fan keep up on a couple of the better tv shows and catch movies on a whim that i would enjoy rather than be stuck watching boring crap in the middle of the night when im unwinding from my closing shifts

i get many more hours of enjoyment out of it then i do gaming

im just saying if i had too get rid of one or the other.....dvr for me but i fell off the deep end long ago

theres really only a very small handfull of games that really truley keep my interest in the hobby so it isnt that much of a leep of faith for me too choose one over the other

besides whats it matter i have the best of both worlds anyways

as for a vcr.......dont even own one anymore

and have or am in the process of giving away all of my tape collection

Just want to say that this weekend, I was SOOOOO glad I had the TiVo. Even though I was working 14 hr. days all weekend, I was able to watch the Saturday´s games Saturday night (sort of, kinda dozed off once and a while), thanks to the ol´ TiVo. Just a handful of button presses, and voila, games recorded with ease. (Oh, and I missed the Panthers´ winning TD, even though I added a bunch of time for OT, I could only add so much with the 2nd game right after. Still, it was great to see as much as I did.)

Monday was great- I woke up, and started watching the games. In my world it was 1pm Sunday, even though it was Monday! Watched at a normal pace (huddles and everything, I like the rhythm of football), and with no commercials, no halftimes!

Just superb; once again, TiVo works its wonders. What a great quartet of ball games, too! I´m glad I didn´t miss ´em!
