New downloadable course for Links....

Post by Sully »

expected to be released over the next 48 hours.
As many already know, it will be Kapalua Plantation.

Now for the bad news, it will cost $5 to download just this one course on Live.
I know this will bring on some mixed reviews.
I, however, am a sucker for this game and will most likely fork over the dough.

$5 for one course? That seems a bit much for a single course. And so begins the trend of wringing every cent they can out of online. I wouldn´t be surprised if somewhere down the line (years from now), we´ll be force fed commercials, or ads during our games.

New downloadable course for Links....

Post by pk500 »

I´m with Sully: I´ll probably pay $5 for it. Hell, $5 is the same as a movie rental or two or a beer or two in a bar.

I´ll get more long-term enjoyment out of a new Links course than I will a movie or a beer.

I still want MS to give us each of the courses on which the 2004 majors will be played this year -- outside of Augusta, which never will be officially released due to licensing issues -- just before each major so I can play along during the weekend.

That would be bitchin´.

Very interesting. $5 is acceptable but not great. I think we should get 2 courses for $5. That just seems more justifiable to me. Considering that a PC game and even Tiger Woods for console has many more courses right out of the box.

I will pay the $5, but if you want to compare the overall amount of courses and what they would cost in other games already out, $5 for one course is a tad steep.

There´s a developer for Links who hangs out on the XBOX.com forums talking about the game. He says they intend to have a similar number of courses that TW has.
This is what he is saying, take it as you will. He has been pretty honest from the time he first posted. He said two months ago that the first downloadable course would be available in January.
Now, he hopes to have a new downloadable course every 2-3 months. I´m sure the $5 fee will still be implemented.

New downloadable course for Links....

Post by Leebo33 »

I am 50/50 on whether or not I will purchase. $5 isn´t that much money, but as a matter or principle I would rather not reward them for failing to include many courses out of the box. What was the PC expansion pack for Links 2003? Wasn´t it 20 courses for $20? I can understand having to pay more for the console courses but not 5 times as much.

I am pissed at Links right now. I think it is way too hard to unlock all the courses that come with the game. Since there aren´t many to begin with they shouldn´t have made it so hard to unlock them all. To make matters worse, unless I am missing something if I want to play a casual round on an unlocked course I have to use the player that unlocked the course. That means if I want to play all of the courses in the game offline with my 7 point character I have to unlock them all with him too. Is this correct?

Leebo:

For a quick, casual round on any of the courses you can Hold L + R and press X + Y to open all the courses. This has to be done each time you boot up the game. I haven´t tested this myself though.

And as far as the new courses go, they are saying that you will not have to re-buy the courses when Links 2005 comes out. So that´s a good thing I guess.

While I don´t think $5 is a lot of money, I think it has the potential to set a bad precedent as it pertains to downloadable content. Are other developers going to start charging for new levels (ie. Splinter Cell) or something? Are roster updates going to start costing money? I´m not sure I like the direction this might be heading. I know "expansion" packs are popular on the PC, but this is a console and totally different consumer market. Plus, the PC also has tons of free mods made by the "community". Also, is this going to give gaming companies even more incentive to half ass a game (limited levels or characters, etc..) with the intention of just adding on later...at a price? Why wasn´t this price ever mentioned when the notion of downloadable courses was first presented?? They were quick to counter TW by saying they will have downloadable courses in the future, but failed to make any mention of charging for it...and I doubt that they just thought of it. I´m just not sure I like the idea.

Besides the fact that Tiger Woods, their major competition, came with 19 courses out of the box.

I´m chuckling at this whole thread and the irony: I´m tighter than two coats of paint when it comes to buying new games, yet I´m willing to fork over $5 for one course. Some of you other cats I know buy games much more frequently than me, but you´re balking at buying a course for $5.

Seriously, no judgements at all. Your money is your money. Your principles are your principles.

I´m just chuckling at the irony, and that includes laughing at myself!

That said, I´m not positive that I´ll buy Kapalua. I don´t know golf that well, but how much different is Mauna Loa -- the default Hawaiian course in the game -- from Kapalua? I´d rather have a course from a locale not in the game or one of the courses from one of the 2004 Grand Slam events.

But in principle, yeah, I´m willing to pay $5 for a course I really want to play. Not sure if Kapalua fits that bill, though. I´d pay $10 for Augusta National!

I don´t like the precident it sets either. I think you will see developers including less in the game initially in order to sell them online at a later date.

Quick comparison:
TW2004 - $50 - 19 courses
Links 2004 - $50 - 9 courses
additional 10 courses to match TW - cost: $50

Lets see what really the better deal, provided you like both games. I felt a little cheated when I got Links because of the limited courses, but now I feel robbed, and the thief is trying to sell my wallet back.

This is precisely the reason I stick to golf on the PC (although I recently got Links, just to try it out). Free downloadable courses from the community. Virtually hundreds of courses, all for free. You pay the 40 bucks for Tiger Woods 2004 and you can play Augusta, Bethpage, Firestone, Kapalua (both courses) and about 200 other courses that aren´t included in the box...all for a very low price of NOTHING.
Cheated? Did someone promise you free courses? Did you not look on the back of the box to see what you were getting? You payed $49.99 for the same game everyone else got. No one is forcing you to pay $5 for a course.

Great Tiger Woods has 19 courses. 19 courses of fairways that I never miss even with a beginning golfer.

I said it at OS and I will say it here. $5 is a drop in the bucket for me. I used to pay $19.99 for the individual courses back in the early PC Links days. You have to build a foundation and this is the first year of the console version.
I don´t care if it´s the first time Links has been on the Xbox, it´s the same $50 as Tiger woods, which is the direct competition. Links has been on the PC for years, so a lot of the groundwork for making these courses has already been done. I don´t think it´s unrealistic to expect a comparable number of courses to TW.

BTW, the 3 on the initial TW game was a joke. That´s the main reason I NEVER bought it.

Yes, I saw the box, and it said 9 courses. I got the game for Christmas, so I never bought the game. I do feel slightly cheated when they alreasdy have another course out. How many more do you think they had in progress before the game was released?

Is it too much to ask that we can get these for less than $5? It´s a smal price for one, but then add anbother, and another, and soon you´re up to the price of another game. By then Links 2005 will be out, and you´ll have to pay another $50 for these with minor upgrades.

EDIT: The back of the box states "Downloadable Content". It does not say "$5 a course". It also does not say it´s free, but up until now all downloadable extras through Live have been free, so one could expect that to be the case here. It´s misleading.

It´s bad precedent.

They should just offer an expansion pack in 3 months with 10 courses on it for 19.99 or something like that.

Links has a bevvy of courses in it´s arsenal. I don´ t know if they still have the right to them but Links the PC had over 40 courses that werent´ user created. It might even be more. I´m sure those courses have to be modfified for the Xbox but still.

Should be free shouldn´t it. What if Madden charges 2.50 for rosters updates next year. Or new levels for FPS cast 9.99. Now you have pay per play gaming.

"EDIT: The back of the box states "Downloadable Content". It does not say "$5 a course". It also does not say it´s free, but up until now all downloadable extras through Live have been free, so one could expect that to be the case here. It´s misleading. "

Actually, your stored credit card info and an option to enable or disable premium downloads has been an option since the beta with Xbox Live. They even had one premium during the beta (don´t remember what it was) that cost $.01 just to test it out. Last month MechAssault was the first title to acutally implement premium purchases with new modes and maps in a pack for $4.99

I for one don´t see anything wrong with it. When I bought Links I expected the package I paid for and nothing else. There was nothing stating I would be given X number of courses for free. I relate it to my cell phone. When I bought it I got X number of ring tones included. My buddy has twice the number of ring tones in his phone out of the box but I´m not going to go down to Sprint and tell them they need to double the number of free ring tones in my phone because my buddy´s Verizon phone has that many. If I want a new ring tone I´ll download and pay the fee they charge. It´s part of the deal. If I want the tone I´ll pay for it and if I don´t I won´t.

New downloadable course for Links....

Post by Spooky »

You know what, the more I think about it the more I want to boycott this new course download !!!

I have made one purchase for downloadable content already but to me it was more reasonable than this one. I downloaded 5 new songs for Dance Dance Revolution for $5. To me, that was acceptable for a few reasons. First, the game already has 50 some songs and 3 difficulty levels for each tune. I have been playing this game a ton with my girlfriends kids and their friends so we have already gotten decent grades on most of the tunes and were anxious to get some new songs. So I did it. I figured $1 per song is about the going rate for ´legitimately´ downloading music on the internet so $5 for 5 songs seemed reasonable. But I have no other dancing game to compare this to.

Links on the other hand seems to be screwing us the more I think about it. Especially when you compare it like MatthewK did:

Quick comparison:
TW2004 - $50 - 19 courses
Links 2004 - $50 - 9 courses
additional 10 courses to match TW - cost: $50

That is outrageous !!! We should be getting at least two courses for $5 and possibly even 5 for $5 like the songs in DDR. I don’t care if the is more development work for the courses than there are for the songs, that’s should not matter considering the industry standard right now for Links’ most direct competitor is more than double out of the box. I am a tad afraid that if enough people bite on this, the industry will be very quick to start skimping out on initial content and just charge us more for it later. You know this was Microsoft’s plan for Links 2004 from day one. I am sure they had a few more courses ready to go at development time but held back just to charge us.

To me, this is very similar to our concerns about console games now sending out ‘buggy’ or ‘unfinished’ products because we can now download patches similar to PC games. Unreal for X-Box did it, NFL2K3 did it, and I remember the conversations that we dearly hoped that this trend would not lead to a ‘fix it later’ scenario for console games. Well, if enough people shell out the $$$ for this course, the industry will see that people are willing to pay for content that could of/should have been included originally and we will most definitely start to see less and less being included out of the box for all game types !!! Imagine the next version of Project Gotham having 25% less courses than this years and charging us $5 per track for new ones. Imagine the next Rainbow Six having half the terrorist Hunts than this versions and then charging $5 per new level !?!?!? I don’t think I am blowing this out of proportion, am I ???

Something to think about before we quickly jump on this new Links course…

EDIT: Let me state that I would not have near as much of an issue with this if Links had already had a comparible # of courses right out of the box. But to give us less than half of what other games can include and then charge $5 for what should ahve been there already is frustrating ! If Links already had 20 courses and then was charging $5 for a new course that was obviuosly made after the games release so that we could enjoy fresh new content, that would be a lot different. I have a feeling that is not MS´s intent with this new course.
Wow you did not even pay for the game and you still fell cheated?

Yes. My wife bought it for me, which means I really am paying for it. The money is coming out of OUR bank account.
I don´t see the complaint? How many straight years have consumers had to play Pebble Beach on TW?

But they never had to pay $5 for each course, did they? I don´t mind paying $50 for the new game if I don´t pay for the 2004 courses, but if I pay $5 for each new course now, I should not have to pay full price for 2005.
A reminder, you don´t have to download the course.
Really!?!
Misleading? Honestly it is that kind of thinking that has turned our little society into ONE BIG FREAKING WARNING LABEL

It is why I have to see that stupid "game experience may change when online gaming".

The sad part is someone will probably try to sue MS over this and we will have yet another warning "Downloaded content may or may not be free"...

Give me a break. Now you´ve taken this way too far. I´m not even anywhere near syaing we should sign a petition and sue. It says downloadable content, not additional content available for purchase. Ask anyone what they think of when they hear the word "downloadable", I´ll bet most of them equate that to mean free. Buy a CD that says you can get additional content on the web like music videos. Are any of those not free? All of the other games I have that say downloadable content have been free. I´m not asking for a damn warning label jackass, I´m saying that a precident has been set that people see this and expect free. Now it´s not.

YES I KNOW I DO NOT HAVE TO BUY IT!!

That´s not the point. I have every right to voice my opinion over their chose of charging for extra courses. If it was a better deal, say 2 for $5 I would be less bothered. But this does set a bad example for the future. You can bet developers wil hold back features, cars, tracks, levels, courses, classic teams, etc.. if they kjnow they can charge for them after the fact.

New downloadable course for Links....

Post by pk500 »

We´ll see how the consumer responds. If Links players don´t flock to buy the new course at $5, then either MS will stop making add-on courses or offer them at a lower price or free.

Hopefully the consumer will dictate the future path of these downloads.

And no one is forcing anyone to buy the courses. It´s not like the game will be incomplete without Kapalua.

Again, I´ll buy courses that interest me. I´ll find a map of Kapalua on the Web and compare it to the other Hawaiian course included in the game. Chances are I won´t buy it.

But I will buy a legendary course, such as Shinnec*ck Hills, Colonial, Torrey Pines, Merion, Augusta, Winged Foot, Oakland Hills, Baltusrol, Royal Troon, Olympic, Bel Air or Pinehurst. I´m way more interested in those courses than someplace that is little more than a course designer´s and golf vacationer´s wet dream, like Kapalua.

I don´t golf in real life, so I´d rather have courses with historical meaning than courses that make my little putter stand tall.

Take care,

New downloadable course for Links....

Post by bdoughty »

Of course you are the one resorting to the namecalling so I will leave that for you. I am simply stating some points in a discussion, if those points in the discussion make you look "stupid - your word not mine" that is not my fault.

I know very few people who have played Tiger Woods and Links and came away enjoying Tiger Woods more on the console version.

Now lets see how many courses for $5 should we the consumer get...

Ah yes that 2 courses for $5 sounds terrific. Why not 3 courses for $5. Why however do you calculate what is a bargain is? What should a course run?

I can only go back and use a time when I had to pay for a course, over and above the game itself.

Back in 1993 (est) I payed $19.99 (going off my memory) for the individual courses for Links 386/pro. Do the interest and that comes to roughly $25.65 in todays world of money. A mighty chunk of change for a course but I was will to shell it out at the time.

Now in 2003 when people are making higher salaries then in 1993 Microsoft has the audacity to charge $5 for a course.

Those evil bastards.

New downloadable course for Links....

Post by JRod »

Okay than answer,

Would you pay $55 for Links (same game no changes) with 10 courses. Or $60 for Links w/ 11 courses.

Maybe time has deferred your payment but the fact still remains.
