... congrats to Team USA for its 4-3 victory over Canada today to win the World Junior Hockey Championship for the first time.

The U.S. won on a really flukey goal, as Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury tried to clear the puck from his crease, and it bounced off his defenseman and back into the net.

But a win is a win. And it´s a historic win.

Chin-up, Grog: At least the Oilers are leading the Devils, 2-1, with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

P.S. to Grog: I watched some of Team Canada´s 10-0 victory over the Ukraine last week while in Canada on a short vacation. Sidney Crosby was very good, but I was really impressed with Nigel Dawes. I hope some NHL team gives him a chance at some point despite his small size. He seemed like a quality kid during interviews, too. Dawes also scored twice today against the U.S.

Take care,

Nigel Dawes was drafted by the New York Rangers and there is no doubt he´ll be playing for them in a couple of years. Sydney Crosby got tossed around like a rag doll today. I don´t even know how much ice time he got in the third period. The best player by far and away was Zach Parise for the USA who was drafted by the Devils last June.
Also the NHL Center Ice package showed a lot of the games!

PK, what can I say? Congrats first of all, regardless of that stupid last goal the bottomline is that the Canadians choked and the U.S. team played a great third period. Watching the game at work I had remarked to some co-workers after the 2nd period that a two goal lead tends to point to a comeback compared to a 1 goal lead, why is that I wonder? Seen it happen so many times. It didn´t help that Fluery didn´t live up to his top goalie billing either. It was a great win for the Americans though, a comeback like that and haven´t ever won it before must of been amazing for those youngsters. They came to play and didn´t give up.

Nigel Dawes did have a great tournament, I think he has a good future ahead of him for sure. Regarding Sidney Crosby, got to remember that he is the youngest player playing today ( and I think ever in tournament history??) so he is going to be a great player. I think the little bastard also leads the scoring in the CHL as well.

Even though we didn´t get the gold, there is a good possibilty that 17 of these players on team Canada could return next year .... things are looking good for next year´s tourny as most of these kids will be bigger, stronger and more talented.

Congratulations to the U.S. team !

Oh yeah, the Oilers got a point in an OTL...at least they got a point. I actually like the Devils, big fan of Scott Stevens and Brodeur (best goalie right now)

Grog:

You´ve probably read this, but the rumors coming out of Edmonton are that Lowe is looking to deal Georges Laraque, my favorite player, to an Eastern Conference team for a wing who can score.

F*CK!

But as a longtime Oilers´ fan, I´ve learned that no player is sacred. Especially after August 1988, when the Great One was shipped away.

Grog:

I dig Laraque for those same qualities. But he attained cult hero status with me due to his knee injury last year.

A friend of mine who works at the Halifax paper sent me a story last year about Laraque´s knee injury. Amazingly, the story contained Georges´ e-mail address.

I sent a short get-well message to Georges, figuring it would be received by the Oilers´ PR staff, with a form reply returned to me.

No way, Jose. That was Georges´ personal e-mail address. And Georges responded to my e-mail within 48 hours with a nice, short reply. I still have that response from Georges today, tucked away in the Personal box of my Yahoo e-mail.

How many other athletes would have replied like that? Way cool, and it´s why I´ll be a huge Georges Laraque fan wherever he goes in the NHL. I just hope he stays in Edmonton.
Hey, that´s pretty cool ! In the hockey world and NHL the athletes are usually real down to earth nice guys compared to most other sports. When I was in high school and in Jr Highschool there were guys who played Junior and then who made it to NHL ( IE Dave Manson) who were very good guys. Mike Modano also played his junior in Prince Albert but a bit after my HS years.

Around saskatoon where I live now I see the odd ex-NHL player or current NHL player. Guys like Wendel Clarke, Dave brown and Gordie Howe to name a few. One thing I always wanted to do but never got the chance was to meet Wayne Gretzky.
