Disk error on Xbox

Post by Pete »

My son received a brand new Xbox for Xmas, and in 1 weeks time, we have gotten many disk errors.

Is this common? The disks are brand new.

My wife is going to take the box back today and get a different one. Hopefully that will fix the problem, but just wondered if this was common.

Have had my PS2 since inception and can count the times on one hand I have had to "reboot".

Disk error on Xbox

Sounds like the machine, to me.

I had my first dirty disc error, period, last night with Links 2004 with my Xbox, which I bought in June 2002. Game worked fine after I rebooted, plus XSN was doing some screwy things last night.

Good luck!
Disk error on Xbox

I got an Xbox for Christmas and have had no errors yet, so I would assume it is the one you got.

I checked up a little bit on the Xbox, and it appears that a good number of the problem Xboxes contain Thomson DVD drives. There is a way to check which one you have without opening it. But evidently, the Samsung or Philips drives are better than the Thomson drives. I have the Philips drive, which is supposed to be a lot better than Thomson but not as good as the Samsung. But I have had no problems with either second hand games or even with rented games.

This thread has a picture that tells you how you can tell the difference: http://talk.xboxsolution.com/showthread ... did=420

BTW, I am loving my Xbox. I have actually ordered the converted to use my Dual Analog PS2 controller, but I am digging the Controller-S. I don´t have a great TV, but with a game like ESPN Football, I can really see a lot of subtle differences in the graphics on the box. And the load times and hard drive are nice. Plus, the game prices are better (second hand).

Hope you have better luck with your second box.

I have the Thomson and have encountered three or less dirty disc problems. No question the Thomson might be less reliable, but a lot also depends on the care of the unit.

I´ve seen some kids absolutely abuse their Xboxes, and I don´t care if you have an M1 Abrams drive in the unit; if you abuse it, it will break. A bunch of the punks in that very informative thread who have Samsungs still will break disc drives because of rough treatment.

I treat my stuff like the Crown Jewels, so it lasts pretty long, knock on a microchip.

Disk error on Xbox

I´ve had my xbox 18 months (its a thomson) and just 1 month ago I started to get some weird sounds from the drive (sound skipping or cutting out briefly). Then I got a DDE and I used a DVD lens cleaner disk and since then I have gotten 1 DDE. I think my drive might be giving out, but I´m out of warranty now. Does anyone know what the repair cost is. I might be better off getting a new xbox if it is high.

Pete:

Did you ask the sales person to open the Xbox, plug it in and check the drive type? Just curious.
You know, that´s a great idea: I don´t think there´s ever been a single disc drive failure ever reported for a PS2.

Christ, the PS2 trail is littered with broken drives. Both the PS2 and Xbox are made cheaply, often with very base-level parts or worse, to cut costs.

PK, no I didn´t. That was just the drive I got. So far, so good.

Tim, already have a PS2. Works fine. The only problems I have had with the PS2 is watching DVD´s. Sometimes it stutters, lags.

I think with these consoles, it is just luck. With a lot of gadgets now, it seems that luck plays a major role.
