OT: General, Say It Ain't Tso! DSP Mourns...

Post by RobVarak »

Peng Chang-kuei, the Taiwanese chef who invented General Tso’s chicken, a dish nearly universal in Chinese restaurants in the United States, died on Wednesday in Taipei. He was 98.

The death was reported by The Associated Press.

The British food scholar Fuchsia Dunlop has called General Tso’s chicken — lightly battered pieces of dark chicken fried in a chili-accented sweet-and-sour sauce — “the most famous Hunanese dish in the world.”

This got me to thinking. The General Tso's references stretch back to SR. That was like 15 years ago?!? Yikes. As if I need another thing reminding me of my growing obsolescence.

Man, we must be brothers from a different mother. I was thinking about Matt Chamberlain and Wewp! Sports and then Sports Reviewers as I did the dishes yesterday morning. That feels like a generation ago. Then again, it almost is!

Crap.

Speak of crap...where's Grog these days? Think that was right at the beginning of DSP...which according to the registrations was 2002...hell that was only 14 years ago, so SR had to be almost 20 years ago now. Goodness.

I never had General Tso until I saw the obsession for it on this forum, way back when. Now it's my go to Chinese dish.

SR was more short-lived than we think. I remember writing PlayStation 1 reviews for Matt Chamberlain at Wewp! Sports around 1999, and Matt, Jonathan Calvert and me dreamed up Sports Reviewers around 2000, from what I recall. Then everybody came to DSP in 2002 when Matt vanished and the SR weirdness reached meltdown.

But DB, you're right: It feels like we were at SR for a decade. The forum threads, wars, trolling and flaming were insane at that site. Plenty of characters, too. SuperiorMan, Grog and his epic sh*ts and more.

If you really want to get nostalgic, don't forget to check out Sportsreviewers on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Not all the links work, but there is some great stuff from Paul, Jonathan, Matt, Vinny B, etc. Some of the old forum thread links even work. I haven't found the original General Tso's thread, but I will bet it's in there somewhere. I also found this awesome post from almost exactly 15 years ago where the Rally Championships using Colin McRae 2.0 was born. I believe we are also approaching 15 years on Xbox Live. I can remember those early Moto GP days on Xbox Live with was it Hipe dropping the "Hammer"? Good times boys....

Sportsreviewers Fantasy Rally - 12/19/2001

BBReBozo - Mo had the idea, but I wanted to give it its own thread. Any interest from SR forum posters in a "fantasy" rally based on the great PSX racer, Colin McRae Rally 2.0?

Of course honesty would be of paramount importance in this competition. Run a stage and post your best times to the Web site. Points could be awarded to the top finishers, similar to the points scoring method of the real WRC. Of course we'd need more than three participants!

So far, Mo, PK and myself have expressed interest. Anyone else out there want to join us? Hell if we got enough people involved, we could even do teams...

Anyway, I'd like to see it get off the ground. Any chance of waiting until after the holidays though? I'm heading out of town next week and won't be back until 2002.

Sports Reviewers is the brainchild of Paul Kelly and Matt Chamberlain. We have worked at several other great gaming-oriented sites, but decided that there is a need for a sports gaming site that is more oriented toward originality, journalistic integrity, and something a little different from the mainstream.

This site is not for profit, and strives to stay away from the hype of the gaming industry. Most of the folks that we have met in the gaming industry are fine people, and many do exceptional work. Unfortunately, the almighty dollar gets in the way of too many projects, and has influence on the industry in a way that is ultimately a disservice to fans of sports games.

It is our hope that you find Sports Reviewers to be informative, thought provoking, and a fun place to visit. After all, playing games and following the gaming industry should be all about fun and relaxation. Please enjoy your stay, and let us know if you have any suggestions or comments.

Thank You

Favorite Games of All Time
This list of our top-ten favorite games is not to be taken too seriously. In all actuality, it could change on a regular basis given all the games that are released each month. Also, we are all getting kind of old and our memory is slipping. Please do not judge our character too harshly based on our picks. List updated 9/30/00.

Jonathan's Favorites:
1. Treasure of Tarmin (INTV)
2. Ms. Pac-Man (any version)
3. Burger Time (any version)
4. EA's NCAA football series (PSX)
5. Seven Cities of Gold (C-64)
6. Monaco GP (DC)
7. Tetris (GBC)
8. Driver (PSX)
9. Final Fantasy series
10. The Forgotten Realms Archive (PC)

I still play all of these games except for Seven Cities of Gold because the C-64 is at my parents' house. Making the Indians pay tribute and then killing the chief kicks ass.

Matt's Favorites:
1. Tecmo Super Bowl II (SNES)
2. High Heat Baseball 2001 (PC)
3. Out of the Park Baseball 2 (PC)
4. Warcraft II (PC)
5. PGA Championship Golf 2000 (PC)
6. Xenogears (PSX)
7. Hot Shots Golf 2 (PSX)
8. International Superstar Soccer 98 (N64)
9. NCAA March Madness 2000 (PSX)
10. Sim City (PC)

Next time I start writing about how much I love racing games please b*tch slap me and remind me of this list.

Don's Favorites:
1. Papyrus Indycar Racing Series (PC)
2. Papyrus Nascar Racing Series (PC)
3. Papyrus Grand Prix Legends (PC)
4. Microprose Grand Prix Series (PC)
5. Mario Kart/Mario Kart 64 (SNES) (N64)
6. Gran Turismo/Gran Turismo 2 (PSX)
7. Doom/Quake Series (PC)
8. EA's NCAA Football Series (PSX)
9. Warcraft II/Starcraft (PC)
10. Half-Life (PC)

Paul's Favorites:
1. Medal of Honor (PSX)
2. Kings of the Beach (NES)
3. Gran Turismo/Gran Turismo 2 (PSX)
4. Colin McRae Rally (PSX)
5. Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX (PSX)
6. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (PSX)
7. Michael Andretti's World Grand Prix (NES)
8. Tecmo Bowl (NES)
9. Track and Field (NES)
10. Pole Position (Atari)

In reality, Medal of Honor would fill about the top five spots, followed by Kings of the Beach in sixth.

Vinny B's Favorites:
1. Goldeneye 64 (N64)
2. NFL 2k1 (DC)
3. You Don't Know Jack (PSX)
4. Medal of Honor 1,2 (PSX)
5. Road Rash 3D, Jailbreak
6. Jet Grind Radio (DC)
7. Crash 1,2,3 (PSX)
8. NBA Live 2000 (PSX)
9. WWF: Warzone (PSX)
10 Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 (DC)

Since we are waxing nostalgic, what happened to Eric (hipe) and Vinny? Maybe Vinny will turn up when the next gta comes out? Those 2 were my favorites along with Siam. That was some great free entertainment!

Siam was the resident troll. As a young and arrogant kid on Sr, I really enjoyed his act. I'll NEVER forget the time hipe was allegedly at the airport and Siam was supposed to visit him, or Siam doing play by play of world Cup games in Sr chat lol. That was some awesome free entertainment. I remember seeing Siam on here a few years ago under the name Inya-something or other. Maybe he's still lurking

Jayzus, you cats have good memory. I either need to take more ginko biloba or lay off the devil's lettuce.

Fat chance on either. :)

Damn, has it been that long???? SupMan got on my damned nerves...lol. I can't remember how I found SR, but I think Mix got me involved. Fun days, for what they were. I still remember the sound of the dialup modem as I waited to sign in... :D

As to the OP, while the General's cook is gone, thankfully, the General will live on!

There was a five year period when I was eating the Generals chicken 2-3 times a week for lunch.
