Jet.

Yeah, I know they´re kind of the "garage band" flavor of the month, but I really dig ´em. Jet is just a straight-ahead Aussie band that celebrates the excesses of rock.

Basic songs, but more than three chords, and lyrics about hot chicks and debauchery. None of this hip-hop-infused rock bullshit, and no Scott Stapp lyrics about "my pain" as he earns millions per year as the lead singer of the worst modern rock band around, Creed.

"Are You Gonna Be My Girl" is Jet´s big hit, and it´s good. But I´d put it about midway through the list of songs on the record if I ranked them from best to worst. "Cold Hard B*tch" is one rockin´ tune -- my current favorite.

Sure, the band can be lumped into the recent garage band craze, but I think Jet has a bit more of a throwback, richer sound than some of the sparse tunes by White Stripes, The Strokes, The Vines, etc.

Anyways, if some of the older cats in here yearn to listen to a straight-ahead rock band that reminds you a bit of AC-DC, a bit of Oasis´ rockin´ stuff and a bit of other straight-on rock bands, check out Jet.

P.S.: Jet´s "Get What You Need" is featured on the NHL 2004 soundtrack. Check out EA Trax for it while playing that game.

Merry Christmas,

re: Creed

I don´t profess to give 2 shits about the lyrics or the personalities in the band... but some of the guitar riffs on Creed´s latest album really grab me. Worst modern rock band around? Gimme a break. Maybe they are not so original and foolishly attempt to be larger than life... but the worst? Yeah right.

I´ve always been more of a "music" guy than "lyrics". Most of the time I don´t give a flying ***** about what they are saying as I pay most of my attention to the instruments. Albums like Tools latest are musical bliss for me.

I have a "guilty pleasure" though. I absolutely LOVE the Avril Lavigne album, and almost all of it I love because of the melody of the singing, not the underlying instrument playing.

James:

Agree with you on Avril -- a very catchy record.

But Creed rips off every grunge band that preceded it, both lyrically and musically. We´ve heard all the riffs before, from Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and the like, and Scott Stapp sings a better cross of Layne Staley and Scott Weiland than if those two had gay sex and produced a love child.

Every Creed record follows the formula: A couple of angst-ridden rockers with slow, melodic verses followed by a hard, screaming, crunchy choruses; a couple of anthems and a touching ballad, of course. "Arms Wide Open" -- dear Lord, I weep like broken faucets every time I hear that tune. Yeah, right -- pass me the Cheez Whiz, please!

Creed sucks, period. The worst, most overrated modern rock band going. In my opinion, of course.

Merry Christmas,

Creed is not the worst modern rock band ever.....not even close. You can´t fault them because they weren´t the originial grunge band. I bet they have just as many top 100 hits as did Nirvana. I don´t really care for them that much but I give credit where credit is due and Creed deserves some. "Arms wide Open" is a damn good song...what´s wrong with it being a ballad? Stapp was excited about becoming a father for the first time. He´s an artist...that´s what artists do.
You wanna talk sellout try the Goo Goo Dolls oddly enough who call upstate NY home. They were hardcore punk but when they realized that didn´t cut it they went to something that did. While their true fans were outraged it´s still the best move the band ever did and you can bet ol Johnny Rzenik doesn´t regret it.
Creed is no worse than the other bands of today. Staind comes to mind as somewhat similar. Creed the worst band....no way.

Tim:

Yeah, all would suck except for the autograph from Steve Yzerman.

I still have no idea where you think I dislike Yzerman. I like him immensely; I just don´t think he´s one of the top five players in NHL history.

My respect for athletes isn´t a popularity contest. Take Barry Bonds, for example. He´s an asshole of the highest order, yet he´s also one of the five greatest ballplayers ever, in my opinion.

Yzerman is a stud, and he´s a class act. But that doesn´t make him one of the five greatest players in NHL history. Jean Beliveau was a stud and a class act for the Habs, yet I don´t put him in the top five, either.

Beliveau and Stevie Wonder are in the same category, if you ask me. Among the very best in the league during their eras, good numbers, true leaders, class acts, stayed with the same team. Nothing wrong with being in the same mention as Jean Beliveau, or being mentioned in the same class as Steve Yzerman.
No question that the Goo Goo Dolls veered toward pop. But I also think that artists are allowed to evolve or try different genres, and the Dolls happened to find one that pays a lot more than punk.

So yeah, they sold out, just like Green Day and The Offspring. But name me a band that doesn´t want to make money, and I´ll name you a liar.

And what´s wrong with a band that changes styles? The Goo Goo Dolls have been a major-label artist for around 10 years or more; I think they´re entitled to change their sound. After all, do you want every U2 album to sound like "Boy?" Every Beatles album should have sounded like "Hard Day´s Night?"

And that leads into one of my big problems with Creed: The band not only rips off the sound of every grunge band that preceded it, but it hasn´t evolved much at all. "Higher" and "My Sacrifice" might as well be the same damn song. Even bands like Rush, which have a very distinct sound, have evolved. Creed has not, simply milking the cash cow.

"Arms Wide Open" is pure pap, the s*** that makes Bic lighters flick around the world during encores. I´m glad Scott Stapp was happy be became a dad -- too bad he had to write a cliched, hackneyed ballad to tell the world about it.

But then again, the bar is pretty low for Creed.
Just for the record I love the Goo Goo Dolls. They are one of my favorite bands in the last 8 years without a doubt. I still swear up and down to this day that on a weekend trip to Toronto back in 1987 me and some buddies saw John Rzeznik playing guitar for coin on Yonge St. He was doing covers of anything you wanted to hear. I think he got about $30 from us for several songs. $30 in Canadian of course! When we asked him who he was and he simply implied "John from Buffalo". Me and my buds still talk about that to this day.
Very cool story!

Say what people will about the Goos, but they know how to craft a smart, catchy pop song. John Rzeznik writes some pretty damn good lyrics that remind me of The Replacements at times. I´m not saying Johnny is the next Paul Westerberg; I´m just saying that some of the lyrics remind me of the Goos.

The Goos are one of my guilty pop pleasures, for sure!

"Even bands like Rush, which have a very distinct sound, have evolved."

Welcome to DSP, the official home of Rush fans who love sports video games! Seriously, we´re setting a land speed record for references to Canada´s #1 prog-rock trio.

But as much as I enjoy a well-thought out couplet about the Land of the Lotus Eaters and the freewill of Man, there are also times when I just need the majesty of rock and not so much the mystery of roll. When I´m on the treadmill, I need more "Highway to Hell," less "Highway 61 Revisited." And you could do much, much worse than imitating Bon Scott era AC/DC, so the garage-rock revival is much more welcome than the Star Search revival of American Idol.

PK, if you like Jet, you should look into The D4s "6Twenty" album. More of the same, but there are some very catchy, crankable songs on it.

PK,

Thanks for the heads up ! I saw them on Conan O´Brian and liked the song they played. I was interested to hear more and now I have reason to !!!

BTW,

Anyone heard the band ´The Darkness´ ??? GREAT CD !!!!! They are a very weird combination of AC/DC, Guns & Roses, with a singer that harkens the days of Grim Reaper. Very interesting and I think it is somewhat of a novelty, but it really has some great tunes and some very down and dirty rock riffs. You can´t beat a song whose chorus is ´Get your hands off of my woman mother f**ker !´.

The Darkness ???

Jeez, you´ll be telling me you think that Tenacious D are a credible rock act. The first time I heard the Darkness I thought they were a karaoke act, and nothing I have seen to date has disabused me of that idea.

"So yeah, they sold out, just like Green Day and The Offspring."

Hey now, Green Day has always sounded the same. They kind of matured with later CD´s but for the most part they never tailored their music for the mainstream. The mainstream kinda grabbed em.

And, yeah, Offspring are pretty much sell-outs.. and if you don´t think so, I got 6 words for ya... "Pretty Fly for a White Guy"

[ This message was edited by: lessthanme on 23-12-2003 01:44 ]
Green Day didn´t sell out? I present "Time of Your Life" as evidence.

Punk bands don´t write ballads dripping with Aunt Jemima like that one. A truly wretched, sappy pop song.
It´s just that "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" was so damn sappy. It´s almost as if it was written to be the soundtrack of high school graduations and sports montages everywhere, even though I know that´s not the case.

Yeah, "Train in Vain" was Mick Jones´ ode to pop, but it´s not anywhere near as overtly commercial and f*cking maudlin as "Good Riddance."

And "London Calling" had a few songs that could be considered poppy, but that album is just so damn brilliant in its genre-hopping that I can´t utter a syllable of discord. Plus there´s nothing wrong with pop.

But I don´t like it when supposed punk bands dip into pop every once in a while, as isn´t punk supposed to represent everything that isn´t pop? Punk is supposed to be as much of a philosophy as it is a musical genre. I just don´t think I´d hear Greg Graffin of Bad Religion toning down to sing something like "Good Riddance." Plus Billy Joe Armstrong´s fake Cockney accent always has driven me insane even if I like early Green Day.

Who knows? Maybe I´m clinging to the mid- to late-70s too much.

Green Day has always been pop with a hint of punk. "When I Come Around" was all about the catchy pop. Every CD of theirs has consisted of whiny lost love songs, complaining about being lonely or raunchy stupid songs. There´s the ocassional punk themed song here and there and a lot of their songs have the punky sound, but I just don´t think Green Day could sell out when they have always been singing about the same basic stuff. I will always think of them as Alt-Pop. They were really ahead of their time. They led the way for the Blink 182´s, Sum 41´s, and New Found Glory´s of today (or yesterday).

[ This message was edited by: lessthanme on 23-12-2003 13:11 ]
