Played an hour, stole an apple, chased a bunch of people for who knows why.

It was free with my XB1 as a download so can't dump it but I agree meh.

I'm actually enjoying it, but I love the Assassin's Creed games (Ass Creed...really?).

The free running is much improved once you get used to the new scheme. Just holding R2 and a button (X to go up and Circle to go down) is much better than the old way of trying to get down a building. Everything is much smoother. I like how the icons over enemy's heads aren't as easy to see this time, so you have to pay attention to the animations to see what's going on.

Overall, it's not nearly as big a leap forward as they claimed, other than the fact that the city streets are DENSE once you get past the intro stuff. Once you get into the Assassins and start running missions it opens up a bit. There was a mission where I was just tasked with killing a guy. Once I got there, I figured out there was about 4 different ways to do it. They're still by-the-numbers assassinations, but it gives you an illusion of choice. You overhear a guy say something, follow the hint, and suddenly unlock what you feel is a secret. That makes the end job a bit easier, and when you do 2 or 3 of those things, suddenly you almost waltz in and kill a target with barely any resistance. I tried going in on another WITHOUT doing any side jobs, and let's just say it was noticeably more difficult.

What I hate is the frame rate. They say it's 30fps, but there have been at least 10 times I've seen the frames stutter with the naked eye--no way this is holding at 30fps at all times. Running across rooftops with 1,000 people in the streets isn't nearly as impressive when it dips to 20fps or worse.

Overall, I'm enjoying it--but I doubt it will get much play time once I get my hands on Dragon Age, Far Cry, and 1st person GTA next week.

The Polygon podcast featuring a new game review each week this week focused on AC: Unity, and reviewer Arthur Gies said this game dips well below 30 fps numerous times on the PS4 and XB1.

Gies said this game feels like a beta that was rushed out the door two to three months too soon.

I played a little more yesterday and it's growing on me. I've never played very far into an AC game past the first one. So part of my issue is not knowing what everything means or how to do things. A mission ends and then it's like proceed with the story and I'm like if I don't then what?

I picked this up mainly for the co-op but I don't really understand how it works.

I firmly espoused the Gabe position on this one. The awful reviews have made me feel quite good about my decision.

Ubisoft says to turn off your internet connection while playing the game to improve the framerate. They say it helps while they figure out the problem.

That would be as ridiculous as GM or Toyota saying, "Please turn off your air conditioning when driving during the summer until we can fix the problem."

Pathetic QC and testing by Ubisoft.

But WAIT, there's more:

Ubisoft addresses every known Assassin's Creed Unity glitch and workaround
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014- ... workaround

Ubisoft may have launched a live blog to keep players up to date with its upcoming patches, but the publisher has also addressed every known issue with the game on its official forums where it's posted workarounds for various glitches

Every bug is labelled either "fixed", "working on it" or "workaround below" and is divided by platform.

For example, the "Arno can fall through ground" bug has been fixed on PS4 and PC (and doesn't seem to be an issue on Xbox One).

Frame rate issues, however, are labeled "working on it" with the potential workaround: "If playing single player, we suggest that you disconnect from your internet connection (wi-fi or network cable). It could potentially improve frame rate."

On a more pleasant note, "Arno to get stuck in a hay cart next to the Pantheon in the Bièvre district", and "a game crash when joining the co-op session of another player who has a specific single player and side missions progression" have both been marked as fixed.

The framerate stuff is definitely sh*t, but I really think the game is fun. It's total "AC" gameplay through and through, but they at least give you some different options now. It feels like you have more options to handle an assassination or other missions, and I gotta say--they really made the fighting harder (in a good way). Their health bar changes from missing-to-red-to-orange-to-yellow just before it hits you. It's not a very big bar, and if you time the counter in the yellow, you can get some hits in on them. There are no more 1-hit kills, which means you have to have time to pepper them with shots. If there are 4 or 5 other guys trying to kill you, that proves difficult.

Plus, any of them may pull out a pistol and target you mid-fight, or throw a flashbomb at you---basically, I've died more in combat in this AC than in any of the previous ones. I finally found all of those "Enigma" puzzles and unlocked the black medieval armor, and there just so many collectables in the game, it's borderline overwhelming.

One thing I do NOT like is having to do their stupid companion app to unlock specific in-game chests, and those missions on the companion app can take HOURS..unless you buy their microtransaction speed boosts, of course! Screw that, handed the phone to my wife, she likes those Facebook-style games. Now I randomly have things unlocking in my game and I don't have to bother with some phone app.

Overall, I think it's a fun game for sure. It's totally Assassin's Creed, so anybody expecting anything else will be disappointed. But it's got some challenge that's been missing from the series, IMO.

And it's missing pirate ships.

Thanks for the impressions, Terry. It's nice to hear thoughts about the game that aren't grounded in hysteria. Listening to impressions of AC:Unity on gaming podcasts you'd think the game was so bad that playing it would give you AIDS*...

I had a Best Buy $20 reward certificate that expired today (never understood why they expire), so I ordered this for $30 for xb1 which only cost me $10 plus tax. I haven't played AC since the original on the x360 so I'm glad it's still AC but with next gen visuals and better combat.

I was able to snag a Black Flag/Unity digital card from Ebay for $19.50 and free shipping. Nice graphics for both games.

an overlooked title, seem to be Assassin's Creed Rogue. In part, cuz it is PS3/360 only

dedicated AC fans have indicated AC Rogue is their favorite title since Assassin's Creed II. The setting alone, does look awesome (North Atlantic Ocean, poles, the NY Hudson valley).
