Holiday video game sales soft

This story surprises me. I always thought games would be of the recession-busters of this holiday shopping season.

Select KB Toy Stores around the country are getting out of the Video Game Business and on Dec. 20th, those stores will mark down all or most of their video games. I saw this story on Gamespot.com

Holiday video game sales soft

This year´s pre-Christmas releases didn´t really stack up to last year´s. There are a lot of good games that have just come out, but are there any real blockbusters? Prince of Persia, maybe the new Final Fantasy, Mario Double Dash.

But compared to last Oct-Nov, where you had GTA:VC, Zelda, Splinter Cell, Metroid Prime, this year seems a bit more business as usual. I think the lack of Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 also really hurt. Plus, the GC and XBox are 2 years old, the PS2 3. I think we´re starting to see the slowdown from this generation of consoles.

Well I bought more games this fall than last year so it´s not my fault.

But actually, there are more games that I want to try than I have time for or inclination to spend money on so I´m sampling some games by renting them.

I don´t think it´s just games though, as Holiday sales started out well but seemed to have petered out. Looks like the economic recovery which everyone was hoping for is not quite there yet, especially for jobs.

Plus, it looks like the price cuts people were calling for might have helped. According to sportsreviewers at least, GameCube sales are doing fairly well. But they don´t cite an actual source.

If the price cut on the GCN made a difference, then Sony and Microsoft might have goofed. Plus, the game publishers could have spurred demand by cutting prices themselves.

As many suspected, this generation peaked financially last year. Artistically, I would say things are better this year than last, even though there is no dominant game like GTA:VC, which was both a critical and commerical blockbuster.

Things have been pretty slow here, but that may also be a result of more and more chain stores opening up in the immediate area. Seems like there´s a new EB Games every minute.

But Brando´s right, there´s no galvanizing hit this year like Vice City was in 2002. Still, with all the amazing games released this year, I expected more action. We still get the occasional numbnuts who come in, stare at the wall of games and lament about how there aren´t any good games out. My first impulse is to throw them through the front door, saloon-style... but I´m supposed to politely inform them of their grave misconceptions.
