Xbox 2 May Use Proprietary Discs [12/12/2003 9:25:57 PM ET]
A job advertisement on Microsoft´s career page hints at the possibility of a new proprietary medium being developed for their next-generation console.
The ad says that the Xbox Team "is looking for a strong PM/Engineer to manage the design and development of the Xbox Game Disc for the next generation Xbox console." It also stresses the importance of anti-piracy technology as one of the key issues in the development of the new discs for the next-generation console. Although it is possible that MS will simply try to incorporate some sophisticated anti-piracy features in the now standard DVD medium, it is probably easier for them to develop a proprietary format.
However, if MS decides to use a new proprietary disc, will the next-generation hardware be compatible with the previous generation´s games?

Big mistake if Xbox games aren´t compatible with Xbox 2 hardware.

Realisitically, how many PS2 owners actually played PSX games on their black box? I played Colin McRae 2.0 and ISS Pro Evolution -- that´s it. But the jump in graphics between the PSX and PS2 was big, so there wasn´t a hell of a lot of incentive for me to continue to play PSX games on my PS2 unless there was stellar gameplay, which was the case with CMR 2.0 and ISS PE.

But if there´s not a big jump between Xbox and Xbox 2 graphically, I think people will want to play some Xbox games on their new system. And even if many don´t, lack of reverse compatibility is a big PR pawn for Sony to move all over the chess board if the PS3 is reverse-compatible with the PS2.
Take care,

There´s a lot of speculation going on right now. One is that instead of a hard drive, they´d use some kind of flash memory storage.
As for backwards compatibility, it´ll be interesting how they do it if indeed they replace the Intel chip with an IBM chip.

The rumors were that Bill Gates, who´s scheduled to speak at the CES in January, will talk about their Xbox Next plans.
