There will be models with 3G...looks like a $29.99/month data plan though.

F**k the stupid a** data plans. I got enough bills to pay. I wonder if someone with an iPhone has to buy a separate data plan for use with the iPad? If so, that's a huge crock!

499 to start is sure better then 899...but 30 a month for unlimited? Yikes. It isn't a cell phone. At least the dedicated e-readers are free!

Interesting how Apple stock dropped 4 percent when Jobs unveiled the iPad but climbed 5 percent -- net gain of 1 percent -- when he unveiled the bottom price point of $499.

Because at that price, plus Apple's marketing plus people ability to be sheep they figure Apple can market it.

Here is the thing I am a proud iPhone user, love it you would need to pry it from my hands. You know why I love it, besides being a phone it has a ton of useful apps that work when I am out and about.

Now here is the iPad, pretty much a bigger iPhone except I can't call anyone. Oh it has e-Reader abilities but nothing revolutionary, I can do limited work on it but not as good as my computer. But it has all the apps my iPhone has, and the possibility of even better ones.

Big problem is the apps I find most useful are when I am out and about as I said. So why would I want to pay another $30 a month, for something not as easy to carry as my iPhone and I can't make calls on?

I'm convinced that the iPad is geared towards the Kindle demographic. Maybe older than the iPhone people but not people that want to take notes or do much more than read, play, games and have music while you do this.

Because if you have a laptop and an iPhone what's the point of having the iPad?

Basically a glorified e-reader/iPhone. The iPhone, for me merged a whole lot of devices into one. The iPad, I'm not too sure about it.

The Inquirer.net summed it up best: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/new ... y-revealed

"Quite like every other tablet under development, the unit is effectively an advanced etch-a-sketch, with a large 9.7-inch IPS touch screen and no keyboard. We're not quite sure who would want such a device, or where it would be used, but the dazed crowd that shuffled into Apple's event today in San Francisco seemed quite excited by the announcement.

The cappuccino company managed to snag the second division footballer Steve Jobs to play host at the event.

For your money, it appears you won't receive a device that can work as a phone or accomplish any multi-tasking.

Steve Jobs must be aiming for the slack-jawed couch-potato, video watching, minimally literate Twitter using demographic of American people with a lot more money than sense - his favourite set of people."

iFail

But seriously, as a new (and very impressed) owner of an iPhone - what the hell is that? Won't a backlit e-reader cause eyestrain?

Blah, what do I know - it'll still sell millions.

It is getting ripped on most tech forums. No multi tasking, no camera, no flash, etc. seem to be the big negatives.

It's like Apple set out to make the tech equivalent of an NFL 'tweener. I'm surprised at how little it actually does. If I was in the market for an e-reader I'd stick with the cheaper Kindle, which looks like it will function better as a reader anyway.

However, they'll probably show Bono writing lyrics for the next U2 album on it and sell a gazillion of them.

Not to mention major glare when trying to read it outdoors. Why would anyone pay nearly twice as much for an ereader-like device that completely ditches the major benefits of a true e-reader? No e-ink, no free 3g, infinitely better battery life.

The fact is that it's not really an e-reader. If anything it's a stripped down netbook with some e-reader functionality. No multitasking, you can't install your own software, it can't do e-ink, and try resting your fingers on the "home" keys when typing, see how that works for ya.
"Be tolerant of those who describe a sporting moment as their best ever. We do not lack imagination, nor have we had sad and barren lives; it is just that real life is paler, duller, and contains less potential for unexpected delirium." -Nick Hornby

I just got a Nook, I was very concerned because I have a degenerative eye disease and one of the many reasons I don't read anymore is the type. The Nook is crystal clear, the font can be made larger and there is no back light I am so happy that I can read again I read almost a full 600 page book last night.

From the pictures shown I don't think I would want to read on an iTab.
