BCFX: Doug Williams Edition

Post by toonarmy »

I could not find a thread about this Black College Football games so I thought I would make one. The price has been dropped to 39.99 two weeks before release, lol. Anyone plan on getting this game? The videos I have watched do not show much about the on-field gameplay, but the halftime band minigame looks kind of neat (Guitar Hero style).

* Authentic Gameday Experience - Realistic gridiron action puts you in the heart of the game while authentic stadiums, fight songs, marching bands and dynamic crowds immerse you in a true game day experience.
* Halftime is still Game Time – Super human band drills and drum major performances will keep you in your seat for the halftime show. Compete in an interactive band challenge for second half momentum or sit back and enjoy the show.
* Drumline Challenge – Battle it out in a head-to-head, rhythm-based mini game. Features more than 100 authentic drum cadences and songs from which to choose.
* Legacy Museum – Experience a tribute to the great institutions represented in the game and learn more about legendary players such as Doug Williams, Jerry Rice and immortal coach Eddie Robinson.

Couldn't give a rip less about this game. The whole idea seems kinda useless, anyway.

A) I don't think you are the target audience for this game, lol.

B) The idea is not useless in the least. The historically black colleges are not in NCAA 10, and do not have a deal with EA. The historically black colleges have an incredible tradition. Arguably the best WR of all time (Jerry Rice) and the best RB (Walter Payton) are from historically black colleges. I have been to games at historically black colleges and the whole atmosphere is different from the typical NCAA game. I am not saying one is better than the other, but just pointing out there are significant differences, from the pre-game atmosphere, to the halftime show, to the style of play on the field. I do not understand how it is useless to make a game about a collegiate sporting tradition that has not been represented to date in a console video game. In fact, I would love to see a video game based on the Negro Leagues of baseball.

Well, let's just make a "White College Experience" football game and see how well that goes over... 8O

I've been to a few of these games, too, and the football isn't even the point-the halftime shows are. I think the mini games with the bands sounds cool, too, but why not just make the game ABOUT that, rather than just a minigame? I know about Rice and Sweetness and all, but they've been represented. And in that vein, we don't have a lacrosse game for the lacrosse players, a women's basketball game for the women, and several other sports not represented. And there are SEVERAL missing NCAA teams in EA's game, including my alma mater along with hordes of other non-1A schools. Doesn't mean I think they oughta make a game for them, necessarily, because it would be a money drain. I just don't see the point. I loved EA's NCAA Baseball on Xbox a few years back, and would love to see another one, but understand why they don't: the market just won't sustain it.

And no, you're probably right...it's not my demographic. Hell, if the game plays football decently enough to challenge EA, then next year, EA will have exclusive rights to black colleges, too...

Hey, I agree. Bring on a lacrosse game, and put in more teams in NCAA. Companies put out what they think will make money. That is the beauty of capitalism. If someone thinks that a game representing a neglected demographic (Historically Black Colleges) can make some money, then that's great. We'll see if it does well or not. I think it will flop financially, personally, but I love the fact someone is putting out an alternative to the only college console game on the market. My main point is it is not useless, as you say, to try to make a game based on an experience that has yet to be represented in console gaming.

I'm not sure what to make of your comment about "white college experience." Surely you realize that historically black colleges were set up due to racism and segregation, so that blacks could have a place to get an education and play athletics. Much like the Negro Leagues were set up since blacks were not allowed in Major League Baseball. I am not a senior citizen or anything, but it has been within my lifetime that the SEC, for example, had every school finally allowed back athletes onto their major sports teams. In the absence of being allowed onto major college teams, the historically black colleges developed a tradition different from the "typical" NCAA tradition. Nowadays plenty of whites attend historically black colleges, and blacks attend major universities, but the unique sporting tradition (pageantry, halftime shows, bands, etc) of the historically black colleges still remains. Therefore, it is not about race, but about a unique experience that was developed due to various circumstances. So, division I NCAA has an experience represented in a video game (NCAA 10), and now someone is trying to represent a whole other experience, that of historically black colleges.

Well, here's hoping the reward is worth the risk, and that it's good enough to turn the heads at EA so that, not only might they include the teams represented, but also make more attempts at getting atmosphere and pageantry right...

BTW, the 'White College Experience' was tongue in cheek...

Have you guys played that new drinking game where you take a sip every time someone writes 'historically black colleges'? It's all the rage at the nation's historically black colleges. Heck I'm playing it now and this page has got me SAUCED. :)

By the way, I would LOVE a negro leagues baseball game. Did anyone ever attempt a mod for it on MVP 2005 PC?

Oh, and historically black colleges.

If a new black college was created, would it automatically become a "historically black college" on the second day it was open for classes?

:)

Yours in the sauce,

I personally think the whole thing is a little silly, but I guess if the market allows...

Really, this game is just trying to capitalize on the current video game market. People are frustrated with the EA football monopoly, and music games are all the rage, so it can't be totally surprising some game company sees cash to be grabbed.

Personally, I have zero interest unless it plays a better game of football than the other football games. The best parallel I can think of is Japanese baseball games, as the Japanese league has another set of teams and certainly a different atmosphere and culture than MLB, but for me my interest is only piqued if the play on the field is better.
