NHL 10 (PS3/X360) Announced

NHL 10 begins a new era with gameplay innovations that deliver a new standard of toughness, the emotion of playoff hockey on the ice and in the arena, and over 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse that every fan sees throughout the NHL playoffs.

EA SPORTS has innovated a new, physical brand of hockey that includes first-person fighting in NHL® 10 to match the toughness and emotional intensity real-world NHL players endure in pursuit of a Stanley Cup Championship.

The franchise that has won 19 sports game of the year awards over the past two years begins a new era with gameplay innovations that deliver a new standard of toughness, the emotion of playoff hockey on the ice and in the arena, and over 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse that every fan sees throughout the NHL playoffs.

A new first-person fighting engine enables players to trade punches with an NHL tough guy. Feel what it’s like to be on the ice in the skates of an NHL player to throw and dodge punches. Grab and tug an opponent’s jersey to land a punch that ignites the fans and sparks your team to victory. Challenge a skill player and an opposing team tough guy will step in to settle the score.

On ice toughness and intimidation is taken to a new level in NHL 10 where winning one-on-one battles for possession of the puck along the boards becomes a test of will and skill. Utilizing an all-new board physics engine, players can use their body to shield the puck on the boards and then kick-pass it to teammates. Bigger, stronger players pin opponents to the boards while fanatical fans bang on the glass, just like real life. Fore-check defenders, pressure the puck and finish checks to intimidate your opponent into mistakes. Players fatigue, bobble passes, and avoid collisions under threat of constant physical pressure. Inspire teammates, ignite the fans and change the momentum of a game by instigating scrums, drawing penalties, and mixing it up — all after the referee blows the whistle!

“This is the most authentic simulation of hockey we have ever created,” said Producer David Littman, a former NHL and minor league goaltender now in his eighth year working on the NHL franchise. “The Stanley Cup is the most difficult trophy in all of sports to win and NHL 10 replicates the emotion, intensity and toughness players require to win the Cup.”

NHL 10 features more than 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse of hockey and deliver the most responsive and authentic action ever for the series. Players can one-time loose pucks, score from their knees, knock pucks out of the air and lift a leg to fake a shot on goal. A new 360° precision passing mechanic delivers control over the speed and direction of passes so players can bank passes off the boards or play the puck into space for teammates to skate on to it. Plus, all-new interactive crowds bring the emotion of playoff hockey to life with towel-waving fans, glass bangers and crowds that react to the action on the ice.

Prove you are tough enough to quiet the crowd, silence the opposition and survive a playoff run to lift the Stanley Cup in NHL 10.

NHL 10, developed by EA Canada, will be available in stores this Autumn for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Yes this is a new thread. The one I wil use to link to future updates.

'This is the most authentic simulation of hockey we have ever created'. Does that mean that full board play will be included? I certainly hope so, banking passes of the board is a good start and I'd like to see a better technique at dumping the puck too.

Better crowd interaction with towel waving fans, wow, is playoff mode back then?

The improvements sound pretty exciting to me, provided they successfully pull them off of course.

I still want pond hockey of some sort.

More screens - they are definitely putting an emphasis on the action around the boards in the first batch.

10spro, it is like they did the screen below just for you. What is cool is how many different uniform styles, shirts and other Vancouver branded stuff in one little screen.

NHL 10: Let's Get Physical

http://www.gamespot.com/sports/blogs/sp ... ot;title;1

Long Q&A good read. I like these guys line of thinking.

Also, there are many features and modes that NHL fans have been asking for that we will be revealing in the coming months. NHL 10 will have almost all of the features fans have been requesting. It is our goal to be the "Orange Box" of sports games. Stay tuned!

Three things stood out for me in that interview:

No more tape to tape passes.

Boardplay

There's a role for a 'Tough' guy.

I am just salivating...

Hey gamers! There's been a lot of buzz since people have seen the early screenshots of NHL 10 and the video blogs that the producers on the game have been putting out on the Inside EA SPORTS blog. Well hockey fans, you won't have to wait long to get your first glimpse of the game as next Thursday evening, all you have to do is tune in to Spike TV to catch Edmonton Oiler enforcer Zack Stortini on GameTrailers TV Presents: The 2009 VGA's-E3 First Look Special.

From OS's C. Becotte; the current passing system has improved further more:

The new passing system gives the user more control because now you will be able to aim a pass to any spot on the ice. You will be able to do that because the developers have added a 360-degree passing mechanic that allows you to use the left analog stick to aim to a spot on the ice. This means you can lead a player with a pass, pass a puck off the boards to a teammate, or you can simply throw a pass towards the crease when nothing else seems open. There is a little leeway in terms of aiming the pass towards a teammate, so you shouldn’t be severely penalized if your aim is off by a couple of degrees.

The automated nature of the current passing system will clearly be affected by the 360-degree passing mechanic, but it will be shattered by the other element of the new passing system: touch. In other words, the trigger you use to pass the puck will now be pressure sensitive. If you want to hit a streaking player that is far away, you’ll need to push down the passing trigger far enough to get enough power behind the pass. If you want to do a little finesse pass, then you will have to tap the trigger more gently.

How sweet is that.

"gameplay refinements"

2:00 - 2:30 is the most exciting portion of the video for me. Batting the puck out of the air, grabbing the puck with your glove and setting it down on the ice, shooting from your knees, fake shots! The animations look awesome so far.

The crowd animations seemed to be most improved. Look forward to the new battles along the board, the drop pass and the first person fighting looks like a step forward in comparison to the current robotic tilts.

Looks really, really nice. My one wish is for a little better broadcast view to play from this year. Other than that, I really don't have much to ask them to add.

I do hope the "towel wavers" means we're that much closer to seeing the Terrible Towels showing up at Heinz Field in Madden.

I never could get into 09. I thought 2k9 ' gameplay was more fun and fluid. Some semblance of board play should help 10 feel more realistic The face washing after the whistle element could be fun as well.

Not to turn this into a 2k vs EA thing, but after years of being a 2k guy, the past two I converted to EA because I found it more fun, and less frustrating then 2k's offerings.

Now, some things I hope EA steals from 2k is the face off system, the presentation, and the fact that attributes should matter, and Hal Gil can't stickhandle like Malkin........

I'm hoping this year that the competition is closer, but in many ways I think EA has surged into the lead and is ahead by a large distance.

I became an EA guy over the last two years and will not go back until EA screws it up...NHL 08 and 09 were great games and that might be an understatement.

I have to agree with you guys and I am( I guess was works better) far from the biggest EA fan but...I think EA is nailing it lately. Especially with NHL.

Not that the games dont have flaws but they have improved by leaps and bounds...Plus they have all been just incredibly fun to play.

I guess it all boils down to taste in gameplay, but I find 2K to still be more fluid and simply "fun" to play, despite the fact EA is dominant in terms of features and modes of play. I look forward to playing both games this fall.
