NR 2003 Thursday night?
Fellas:
Anyone up for some NASCAR Racing 2003 Season online Thursday night?
I'm up for the SS.net COT's on any of the Revamped tracks. But Terry also will agree that the SImodified Whelen Mod is superb on short tracks. So maybe we can run one Cup track with the COT's on a Revamped track and the SImodified Mods on a TBA short track.
How about 10 p.m. (ET)? Terry, can you host?
Hope we can race!
Thanks,
PK

10 works for me if we want to go with a known commodity, like COTs at Dover since that went over so well. We can just hop in, run 5 mins of practice tops, qual and run with some AI for early birds.
Then at 10:30, go with Whelens or something. Give it a bit longer practice session.
I'm good either way. I can run at least 2 races, maybe 3.

A 10:30 p.m. (ET) start is fine with me, especially if it can get The Godfather (Don) into both races.
Take care,

Agreed. Mix had my ass scared on that restart last week at Martinsville. My tires were shot, and I thought Mix was going to eat me alive. He has become so damn consistent and steady.TCrouch wrote:That's great news. You're becoming a very solid roundy-round racer, Mix. You're one of the under-the-radar drivers that always seems to keep his nose clean, and then when some inevitable pile up occurs, you're always near the front of the pack. Good stuff.mixdj1 wrote:I should be able to make it.

Thanks guys. My biggest issue is getting nervous about taking somebody out when in traffic which makes me let up and/or make mistakes instead of being aggressive. It also causes me to hold back on starts/restarts. That's why I didn't try hard enough to make a move against PK last week. I just need to have a couple drinks before race time and I won't give a crap. But then of course my consistency will go out the window.
I've always had that problem with racing simulations. I hotlap and race the AI pretty good but when you throw me in with real drivers I get too nervous and make mistakes or just fall in line behind them and hope they screw up.

That's a perfect real-world racing strategy. Online, though, it will just guarantee you lots of top 5 finishes. You have to be aggressive sometimes, and even if you take somebody out, we'll know it's not intentional.
The only time you would really have to worry is if you do it repeatedly. If you continually make boneheaded passes and kill somebody, then it's time to dial it back a notch. But you're kind of at the opposite end of the spectrum. Get racy and see what happens. You might surprise yourself.
I know if you took the line to the inside of PK, he'd have given you the lane. He might not have given you much more, of course, but you'd have had the inside groove. The difference when you start running harder, especially at ovals, is realizing that if you're inside you have to brake a lot earlier to stick it low, you accelerate later so you don't drift outside and take the other guy out, etc. Outside you can brake a bit later but can't apex it inside, etc. It becomes a really fun game of cat and mouse where the outside guy goes just fast enough to pinch you down low and not let you accelerate off the corner, but the inside guy has to respect that and not collect both cars.
It's a hell of a ride once you get there. PK and I play off of each other's line constantly, any time we're near each other. That's 90% of the fun. We're still going to bang into each other once in a while, but if he hits me or if I hit him, we both know it wasn't intentional. That's just racing. So come RACE

Agree 100 percent. My ability to dice with Terry has come with experience, and with him generously imparting his knowledge and wisdom.TCrouch wrote:It's a hell of a ride once you get there. There's also a big trust factor between us. We trust each other's racecraft in tight quarters.
Mega fun!
Take care,

Boys:
Here's what you need to get for the Whelen mod, in this order:
Project Wildfire BGN high-res mod (Whelen physics based on this mod):
http://www.masgrafx.com/masgrafxracing/ ... ad&sid=582
BGN Volumetric Shadow Fix:
http://www.masgrafx.com/masgrafxracing/ ... ad&sid=582
SImodified.com Whelen Modified mod:
http://www.simodified.com/downloads.html
SImodified.com Tire Shine patch, Dash Texture fix, Whelen patch v2 (all separate files):
http://www.simodified.com/downloads.html
Install each of these in the order I listed them above. Everything but the patch, fix and V2 update are executable files, so they're click and play. When you get to the patch, fix and V2 update, unzip them into the series/whelen directory in your NR 2003 install.
It all appears complicated on the surface, but that's far from the truth. If you have a decent broadband connection, you can have all of this downloaded and installed within 15 or 20 minutes.
Trust me: It's all very worth it. The Whelen Mods mod is the best short-track mod for NR 2003, hands down.
Post or PM me with any questions or problems. See you cats tomorrow night!
Take care,
PK

Don:
You're absolutely right about those tracks for the Whelens. But I picked Phoenix for two reasons.
One, most of us are at least somewhat familiar with it from racing it in NR 2003 or other games.
Two, it's not quite as close quarters as some of those bullrings, so it will give those new to the Whelens a bit more room to learn the cars and stretch the cars' legs.
So, at the risk of getting shot up like Sonny at the toll booth, I'm telling The Godfather to piss off for a week!
But definitely next week at some of those bullrings you mentioned. Thompson, Stafford, Milwaukee and IRP are AWESOME with the Whelen Mods. Terry and I also had a great time racing the Whelens last Friday night at Martinsville, just the two of us with some AI.
Take care,
Mario Puzo
