Neat article. I appreciated the authors honesty regarding baseball games although it seems that even he was impressed by this years upgrades. Wonder if it'll play any differently. The last 5 years of Sony ball have been too samey for my liking (in the gameplay department). If it plays well online it'll be my game of the year for 2009.
Still wondering about the WBC...

Oh crap did they start hiring EA producers? That's a new feature, I'm sure my geek cred with go even higher when my wife hears me yelling "ARod you a d*****" into my head set.Think A-Rod chokes in the clutch? Ever shout "Dodgers suck!" or yell "Drewwwwwww" when J.D. walks up to the plate? MLB 09 is about to bring out the crazed fan in all of us as not only can you record your voice screaming anything from "Where's Madonna?" to "we want a pitcher not a belly itcher" and put it in the game thanks to peripherals like the Rock Band mic and wireless headset, the fan yells will sound like your voice actually coming from the stands. You can even assign the recordings to be part of a chant and your voice will be put through a new process so that it sounds more like a crowd chanting "over-rated" and not just a single person yelling.

I agree, except this is one thing I've never quite gotten:
Progressive Batting Performance -- Reward players for superior performance and penalize them for hitting slumps. Specific to each individual batter, players are rewarded with contact bonuses for each batter that performs beyond his "natural ability" while under user control. Conversely, the user will be punished with slight decreases in contact for each batter that performs below his natural ability.
While Hot and Cold streaks are certainly welcome, I disagree with the "rich get richer, poor get poorer" nature of this type of progression.

Gamers will also be able to store their favorite songs to their PlayStation 3 and assign them to be played at various points in the game, including a batter's walk-up animation.
Nice. I burned a bunch of songs to the PS3 hard drive last year, thinking I could already do this. It'll be cool to customize the audio.

Someone at neogaf found out this sweet little tidbit for MLB09. A spectator mode.

Maybe this is a dumb question but does that mean we can listen to real MLB games or virtual ones from our franchise or of online games being played?bdoughty wrote:Someone at neogaf found out this sweet little tidbit for MLB09. A spectator mode.

It makes it sound like any game that is being played online.

Yet I think those are two of the most bland stadiums I've ever seen. No character to them.sportdan30 wrote:Those virtual video tours of the Mets and Yankee stadium just looked so ridiculously awesome. The crowd and lighting has improved dramatically imo. I just can't wait for this game.

I loved seeing the bad hop grounder eat up the O's infielder, the better looking animations for off-line throws, the more realistic routes taken by OF's, etc. Looks like the best sports game around just got that much better.

Yup...no doubt about it. It's funny...about a month ago, I went to a buddies house with my PS3 and games. Somehow I lost MLB08...so I haven't been able to play it since then. I consider it a good thing actually. I rented MLB2k8 to get my fix...but holy crap that game is a turd. So I'll just try to wait patiently. MLB09 will be that much better since I won't have played 08 for about three months prior to the release. I can't wait.
