I´m ready to buy a communicator headset for my Xbox, as I can tell I´m missing a lot while playing Links 2004 without it. Wal Mart has an Xbox Live Starter Kit 1.0 with what´s called a communicator, and 1 year of XBL for $39.95. The picture on the cover of the box looks deceiving; giving the appearance that the "headset" included with this bundle is something less than the "Communicator Headset" you get when buying it by itself for $29.95.
I can´t resist getting a year of XBL for $10 more if there is no difference in the headsets, but if I´m going to wind up getting a low-rent version of the headset, and the possible frustrations of having something not working correctly, then I´ll just buy the headset by itself.

Definitely get the official headset. I´ve tried a couple other headsets and they are too sensitive. Without the noise cancelling features of the official headset I was constantly broadcasting unless I turned my TV down to the point that I could barely hear it. And in fact one of the headsets I tried kicked in from the vibration of other live users coming through the earpiece. I´ve had ZERO problems with the official one (well, except for the fact that I broke my first one )
