Firefox 3

Will be officially released tomorrow (Tuesday June 17).

I've been on Beta 5 then RC 1 for a month or two. Really enjoy the faster page loading, the new functionality of the address bar, and better system performance (no memory leaks). I also use the new page zoom as well (everything on the page is zoomed, rather than just text enlargement).

Most of my extensions have been updated by now, but still waiting on a few. Check to see if your essential extensions will work before upgrading, and if most are covered I would recommend updating.

Yeah i'm really looking forward to the new release as well. I've read Firefox 3 looks a little different/better vs Firefox 2.

I don't understand what you mean by extension? What is that?

Extensions=add-ons, which is what they were called with Firefox 1. If you're not using Extensions, then you're using Firefox with one hand tied behind its back.

OK gotcha. Yep i'm using an extension then as I have an add on theme I installed.

Themes really aren't add-ons. They're more cosmetic than anything else. Add-ons are additions to Firefox that increase its functionality and modify existing FF features or add features that aren't found in the standard browser.

Oh OK, I just use themes. I guess an extension would be adding something like the Opera speed dial feature, then.

Like it. It's faster. I really like the SmartAddressBar, the ease of bookmarking, the ability to create tags for bookmarks and the site ID features the best among the new features.

Nothing revolutionary for me, but definitely a better browsing experience than FF 2, which already was the best browser on the market.

Thanks for the explanation and the link...I've never messed with any of this stuff before but will have to try some after downloading the new version.

i cant seem to find a add-on for a shortcut to open bookmarks in new tab, like IE7 does, and i want one to highlight links and able to have that open automaticly in a new tab.

both of those features i love in IE7, the "copy to URL" is part of a nice IE add-on called IE7pro

However i am trying to use FF3 to see if its all that .

Do you mean open an entire bookmark folder or just individual bookmarks? If you're talking individual bookmarks, all you do is click your middle mouse button or mouse wheel, and that bookmark will open in a separate tab. Same with links.

Those have been default features of Firefox for a long time.

I mean if someone posts a rapidshare link in text not an actual link, i can highlight it and right click, then there is an option copy to URL.. bamm!! it open in a new tab to the rapidshare page ready for download.

Perhaps the biggest improvement in Firefox 3 is memory management. The first two versions of FF were RAM pigs, with frequent leaks.

FF 3 is using about 30 to 40 percent of the RAM FF2 gobbled on my machine.

I've been using the BlackJapan theme on Firefox ever since an update put extra space between every bookmark link, limiting how many links you could fit on the screen.

So I'm going to stick with 2.0.0.14 until BlackJapanMAX has been updated to work with Firefox 3.

I'm not sure I follow. All you need to do to open bookmarks in a new tab in FF is to click the bookmark with your scroll wheel or center mouse button.

You're still using a two-button mouse?

i'm on a laptop, so yeah it only has 2 buttons! Like on IE7 from the favorites list there is a small --> you can click to open into a new tab. It's not a big deal but so far i am really liking ff3.

I do have a nice mouse that is fitted to the hand and glows!! if you wanted to know.

You wouldn't know how FF knows what theme to load based on what OS your using, do you? XP is green and Vista is blue, I really like the look of the Mac theme and would like to .. how you say extract.

I gave up using the touch pad or "nubby mouse" on my laptop years ago. The old hands could only take so much abuse.

So far, I don't think you can do it. But someone will build a Windows theme that looks like the Mac theme very soon. It's a given!

Fart around with Add-ons, if you haven't already. They really make Firefox come alive.

OK, wait: Now I'm really confused. When I right-click on a link in FF3, I see an option to "Open Link in New Window" or "Open Link in New Tab." You aren't seeing that?

Maybe that functionality was added as part of an Add-on I have. Let me know, and I'll get to the bottom of this for you.

Right-clicking a link should bring up the drop menu with link options as a standard firefox feature.

For laptop use, if you download a mouse gestures addon like EasyGestures, you can set that so simply right-clicking a link will open it in a new tab.

Alternatively, by default in Firefox, holding Ctrl while left-clicking any link (including bookmarks) will open the link in a new tab.

Are PK and I the only guys using Firefox? I thought for sure a ton of guys here already used it.

I have tried it before but just never found it that useful. I think the add-ons make FF really shine but also too much of anything is bad. I have heard some can slow the fox down. PICLENS is very nice on youtube, where i spend hours just going from one related vid to another, Now i can find many at once.

I do see "open in new tab" from a right click. I was just trying to avoid 2 clicks rather then one as i do in IE7. it's not really a big deal.

The real main factor righ tnow is FF3 is loading almost twice as fast as IE7. Now when i say twice i will say IE7 is pretty quick

As a result FF3 is now my new default, who wants to wait for porn to load!
