OT : Best AntiVirus Software

Post by Inuyasha »

Need to DL some anti virus software. I had Norton on my machine, but it really slowed things down and whenever I was on the net, those damn popups appeared with warnings.

What do you guys recommend? I'm looking for anything I can download Free (legally).

I use to use Avast and recently I switched to Avira as it has been reviewed to have the highest detection rate of the top AV programs. They are both free, btw.

I also like the fact that Avira has a lower overhead so it doesn't bog down the computer like Norton.

I've been using AVG, although this Wiki suggests it is least efficient of the big 3: http://wiki.castlecops.com/AntiVirus_Comparison

It's one of the best AV programs and best of all it's free. :) I also like the fact it automatically updates itself like Avast and AVG. Kapersky AV is still probably the best AV program but it's not free.

Avira doesn't have email scanning. Isn't that a big negative?

For those who have installed AVG 8.0.

Are you having problems with AVG auto updates?

Since I upgraded, the darn thing can't autoupdate.

I have to do it manually. This is in both my home and work pc.

7.5 did it flawlessly. I reinstalled 8.0 and it still can't do it.

Nope I don't see that as a negative because if you open an email that is detected as a virus Avira will go into full alert mode and shut it down fast. Also I believe a lot of the email services scan for viruses. I know Hotmail and Yahoo does that.

And Avira has been reviewed to have one of the highest detection rates of the top AV programs like Kapersky and NOD32. And Avira is free. :)

The only reason I use Norton is because it is the default antivirus that comes free with my isp. No complaints or problems though.

used to be an AVG fan.. big words - USED TO BE. 8.0 is a mess - every scan, it detects nothing, but I get about 24,000 "warnings", all from the same file(s). This is a problem that a few people are writing about. Also - try running OOTP with AVG - it takes a long time to load. Using Avast now , and it works great.. no problems on loading OOTP, and it boots right up.

I also tried the other one you guys talked about (Avira or whatever). Seems like it takes forever to download updates. Also have heard some issues regarding the fact that the program "stops" once it scans a virus during a scan..

I swear by NOD32, it's tough and runs lite.

I might check out Avira, does the free run anti spy on the fly? and how much ram does it use on idle?
