Sportsreviewers.com question

Post by fletcher21 »

Did the site ever come back up? I was out of the loop for the last several years... I'd have to say I considered SR to be one of my top 10 sites I've ever been to... If you don't know what SR is, you're just not oldschool enough!!!

Btw, a little SR info...... Pat aka Droog on SR graduates from BC on Monday and will soon be attending Harvard. I guess we taught him well in all those f***ed up SR chats with HipE, siam007, BBR, Airdog, wco, neckthai and all the rest of you guys

Seeing the title of this thread suddenly makes me feel very old.

While I was more a lurker than poster back then, I fondly remember the SR days. Thank god for DSP.

SR turned into a nasty, punk-ridden mess of a community before finally dying; like a run-away that ends up a crack whore before getting shot.

Fell off the map...or grew up

I remember stumbling upon SR while looking for some Madden sliders, and it was like that horror movie scene where the person enters the room and the doors slam shut behind them without any obvious intervention.

Sport is right though, by the end it was one of those places where you had to be prepared to defend anything that you posted, and some were trying to make a name (if you can do such a thing on an internet forum) by mouthing off and abusing other people.
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."

I really enjoyed SR both the commentary on the main site and the forums. Too bad it all went to sh!t in the end - but hey, most of us ended up here so things worked out!

I'll give Neck your best, Fletch. He sits four seats down from me here at work during May.

Take care,

Yes. It's more work than you'll ever know. Fun, but 21 consecutive days welded to a chair for 12 to 15 hours per day, hammering on a keyboard. I love it, though. Dearly love it.

But if you want to think we sit here, watch race cars and drink beer all day, that's fine. You're not alone in that incorrect assessment.

Take care,
PK

SR was just flat out weird at the end. At one point I had no idea what was going on. Like was Matt playing all of these different characters on the site or something?

I really miss vinnyb. Does anybody know what ever happened to him?

For those that don't know I was bdt92 at SR.

Matt used to write for Wewp! Sports, and I offered frequent comments about his reviews and other posts at that site. I think he got so sick of me that he asked me to join him at Wewp.

After that, we decided one night over an IRC chat session to form Sports Reviewers. The first year or so was glorious. A really cool community, well-done, detailed reviews, a thriving forum and growing contacts within the gaming industry that delivered quite a few free PSX and Dreamcast games to my front door. :)

But then it all went to sh*t. Matt started going off the deep end, and the whole multiple personality crap with Superior Man got nutso. At first, Matt denied that he was Superior Man, but as time passed, it became pretty obvious that Sup was a creation of his mind.

Matt and I were pretty tight there for a while. Hell, he even came to the IRL race in Kentucky -- where he's from -- when I was on the road working IRL races, and we spent a cool weekend together, going out for dinner, talking games, racing, etc. Really thought he was a cool dude.

But by the time the Superior Man stuff got out of hand, he was not the same guy that I knew a year or so before. Still have no idea what happened, but it's not something that worries me or that I have thought about in years before this thread was made.

I second that. Vinny was a great guy. I'm ashamed to admit I had forgotten about him until this thread. A very, very nice guy.

I have no idea where Vinny is. It would be great if he could return to the "family" here at DSP.

Take care,
PK

I've been along for the whole ride...chatting with PK on USENET, going to WEWP, then early SR. (I was a reviewer for SR too). Though I never met Matt in person, I had a lot of correspondance with him online, and it was just weird with what happened in the end. Best I can figure is that he totally soured on the hobby -or maybe the importance of the hobby in his life- and decided to maybe tweak those who held their gaming hobby as 'too important' a little on his way out.

Vinny posts occasionally at OS. It'd be great if he popped by here, I agree.

Jay-zus H, Web, I totally forgot about the Usenet days. You clearly have killed fewer brain cells by questionable means than me. Good for you! :)

I was mostly a lurker in the SR days (under a different moniker to boot) but I second what most of you have said in this thread. Don't forget the triumphant, albeit short, re-launch of the site with the mail (or male?) sack featured prominently on the front page? Somewhere around that time the sportsreviewers URL became permanently banned from my work network. :P

I used to talk to Vinny now and then when he lived in Florida. Last time I spoke with him I thought he said he was moving to another state. Cool cat without a doubt. If we want to lure him back,we need to start a thread about Venus Williams.

I forgot just how f***ed up that forum became when "Superior Man" and "CommonSense" became the roaches that wouldn't leave when we turned on the lights. It was a very cool place until that s*** got out of hand. The cream of the crop found their way over here so it's all good.

I had always wondered about the history of that place. Thanks PK for sharing some of that.

By the way, hope you are enjoying Indy because its a blustery 39 degrees, wet and windy here in our little humble slice of Central New York.

That was some crazy stuff. Like here when any drama starts, I stay out of all of that stuff so I found it pretty comical, although it was sad to see the site coming to an end.

Superior Man........oh man. I know that whole thing upset a lot of people but that WWF Mr. Perfect routine was one hell of a bait he was laying. I guess if you are going to close down a site why not send it down in ball of flames.

He's still trying to take his beloved Falcons to the promise land with his family cheering him on.

I also wish Vinny would make his way over here...definitely a cool guy that is missed on here. Another dude that made his way over here, but ended up disappearing is Cincy Kid...he was one of my favorite dudes to game with back on the original Xbox w/ Xbox Live. I think he had some kids and maybe that's the reason he doesn't have time for us anymore.
