Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!

Post by MUTTS »

Useless info but my boys and I took in the HBO after dark card on Saturday night. Tremendous to see it live as I hadn't been to an event since seeing Sugar Ray Leonard fight when I was 11. My boys are 10 and 13 and they loved every minute of it. I guess I've been a closet boxing fan for the past year or so.
Any recommendations to get educated on the sport - websites etc?

Tony:

Sorry for the tardy reply. Fantastic news that you and your sons enjoyed the fights so much at Turning Stone. I attend nearly every live card at the Stone, but I missed this one because I had knee surgery five days before the bouts. Watched the card on HBO, though!

Really pleased your sons enjoyed The Sweet Science so much. The sport needs new fans, and it's refreshing to find kids who like boxing in addition to, or hopefully instead of, that MMA sh*t. Boxing is a sporting art.

Some good blogs and news links about boxing:

Please feel free to PM me with any questions about boxing. I love it -- another boxing fan at DSP! :)

A Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor Boxing vs MMA fight was rumored last week which Dana White shot down saying it wasn't true. Now the rumors have started up again but guess who first started the rumors? Yup "Money".

That "fight" isn't even worth comment.

But Canelo's KTFO of Amir Khan Saturday night is worthy of plenty of conversation. KO of the Year so far, and I bet it will stand up all the way to Dec. 31:

Exactly. It was only a matter of when Khan would be caught, not if.

WHAT A MAIN EVENT Saturday night between Salido and Vargas. One of the best fights I've seen in the last five years. A fitting tribute to The Greatest.

That fight was bad ass. I think the draw was the right call. I'm curious to know how swollen Vargas' eyes were this morning. They should definitely rematch.

Absolutely. One of the few times a draw was a just result.

Vargas won't fight again this year. He needed plastic surgery after the fight to close the cuts under and around his eyes. Fighters don't fight enough these days, but Vargas and Salido both earned the rest of 2016 off after that performance Saturday night.

Still, I think Salido will rematch against Lomachenko this fall and then fight Vargas in a rematch in early 2017. I'm already salivating.

Good God, what bravery. What balls.

Have zero interest in McGregor vs. Floyd.

Sports Center had some boxing or UFC expert on talking about it.

Towards the end of the segment, the anchor asked the expert whether he personally was going to pay to see the event.

He paused and then sheepishly said he'll pay because it's a "cultural event."

He could have just said "circus" or "sham."

Solid fight on ESPN tonight - Lomachenko (STUD) vs Marriaga. I'll be watching a REAL boxing match tonight...unlike the joke scheduled for later this month.

Well said.

Lomachenko, along with Mikey Garcia, are the two most skilled fighters in the game today. I would use Lomachenko as a poster boy for a boxing technique video. The dude is The Matrix.

Mayweather's isn't called "Money" for nothing, the guy is a marketing genius.

Of course not. But you can't blame me for proving P.T. Barnum was right by paying $100 for this sham. I will pass unless nine other friends want to put $10 each into a hat.

I can't believe McGregor agreed to Mayweather's rules, which is why he'll lose big time. No one is still good enough to beat Mayweather's defense even at 40, with the exception of "father time". He should have agreed to two separate fights one with boxing rules and the other with MMA rules.

Mayweather never would have agreed to that. He's not stupid, and he is the definite A side in this fight. He's dictating the terms, the straw that stirs the proverbial drink.

Even with his tax problems, Mayweather is far richer than McGregor. That money -- and his record PPV numbers -- wield power.

I don't follow boxing or UFC closely, but to me McGregor is going into this knowing he'll get his ass kicked, but laughing all the way to the bank. He's basically a wrestling heel, getting everyone to hate him, and want to pay to get his ass kicked.

Unlike wrestling though, you're not guaranteed a 15-30 minute bout for your money, you may be paying $100 a minute for the main event.......
