Rally champion Colin McRae dies with son in helicopter crash

THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

McRae's wife Alison and their daughter Hollie, 9, were not on board, friends said.

Note the BBC still has not confirmed this.

Copter crash near McRae property

Two people are believed to have died in a helicopter crash near the Lanarkshire home of former World Rally Champion Colin McRae.

The helicopter came down at 1610 BST in Jerviswood, about a mile from Lanark, and is understood to have caught fire.

Strathclyde Police said there were no survivors and that no further details about the victims would be released until Sunday.

Mr McRae, 39, is known to be a keen helicopter pilot.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it had been led to believe two people were on board the Squirrel aircraft.

However, Strathclyde Police said the helicopter damage was so bad they could not confirm how many were involved.

A police statement said: "Around 1610 BST on Saturday, 15 September 2007, emergency services were called to a helicopter crash in Jerviswood, east of the A73 at Lanark.

"There are no survivors."

Awful. Truly awful. My heart goes out to his wife and daughter. RIP Colin, one of the best we've ever seen.

What a horrible shame....especially with the young son.
I'm surprised I haven't seen this story on the news or ESPN.

They are probably waiting for official conformation. I'm sure they are also throwing together something for the main page in tribute to his legacy. This is very very sad. He died with his son and leaves behind a wife and a 9 year old daughter:(

Now been confirmed by BBC - terrible news.
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."

I am FLOORED. Really bummed. I don't know how I'll break the news to my 6-year-old son, who loves Colin.

Man ...

Take care,
PK

What's just as crazy is that Dave Richards and his Wife escaped their own Helicopter crash today.

My interest in Rallying didn't start until I played Colin McRae on the Playstation. He will be missed as everyone has said he had no enemies and was well liked by everyone.
