Halo 3 Beta
Has anyone been able to download this via the Crackdown game? It doesn't appear to be working.

I grabbed it late last night...took me about 30 minutes I think.
I don't know why the Halo style has never grabbed me. Maybe because it's exactly like what happened last night. Run out, shoot at somebody with a machine gun, get hit with a rocket. Respawn, run out and see somebody 200 yards away, and get hit with a sniper shot. Run out, get cold-cocked in the back of the head while I'm trying to figure out which button gets on the little bike-quad-thing. Wash, rinse, repeat. I'd even try to spray a guy with bullets right in front of me and he'd end up taking me out first. I just suck at this game style.

Well, there was bound to be one.TCrouch wrote:I just suck at this game style.
I downloaded it last night as well and ended up getting in a party with Mix, Spooky, and Teal. It's definitely fun but it doesn't seem to have changed much from Halo 2 multiplayer.

I'm with ya. Don't understand the fascination either. But then again, I'll probably buy it when it comes out just to say I gave it a shot. Those games hold their value really well on Ebay anyway, so it'll be fine.PRBoom wrote:Put me in the "don't get the HALO pheonom camp" as well.
Dl'd the demo. Played for 5 minutes. I'm done.

I'd have to say if you didn't care for Halo 2 then there isn't anything here that's going to change your mind. But what you do get is an improved, tweaked, HD version of the Halo formula which is all I was wanting. Some of the main improvements that I'm really liking:
* Ability to enable chat for only your team/party (this alone makes the matchmaking games a LOT more enjoyable)
* Spartan "tags" - a letter and two number identifier for your Spartan which makes locating and identifying teammates a lot easier
* Deployable equipment - the bubble shield and power drain are awesome but I haven't found a good place to use the jump pad yet
* The selection of weapons is great - I like having the assault rifle back and the brute spike pistols are devastating
* The new territories mode is really fun - there are now rounds with assault and defense and once you capture a territory it's yours so the battles are more focused
I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting but that's what I really liked about the time I spent with it last night. I'll be setting up a party (love that party system) at 10:30 pm EDT tonight if anyone is interested.

I'd like to try it with people I know. Turns out it was 4 on 4 in the "team training" mode, and the other team were rank 2 or 3...and 3 of us on my team were literally firing it up for the first time. Maybe it was a rare slaughterfest due to skill level of people who had been playing non stop vs total noobs, no idea. I just had never even played Halo 2 much. I'll buy Halo 3 for the single player, as I enjoy it...but online? I'd really have to suddely "get it", and that hasn't happened yet.

I'm so damn ambivalent about this game. It's fun, and the party system and multiplayer options are beautiful.
But the fact remains that even if we get DSP parties going, we're still going to get chewed alive by 14 year-olds and people who have never had anything but Halo and Halo2 in the Xboxes for the last 5 years
And even if we don't get mauled we still have to tangle with the fact that the average Halo player has social skills that would trouble your garden variety sociopath.
Still, I'll probably give it a whirl. But this game will be on a short leash.

I sucked at Halo 2 online but enjoyed the original Halo quite a bit. Still, I thought Halo 2 was the most overrated, overhyped game this decade.

Take care,

I am actually very excited about this game now. I think I am ready for a more arcade fast paced style shooter again. I liked Halo 2 right away, then did not, then did a few month stint once I accepted it for what it was and LOVED it!
The party and matchmaking system has no rival and it is the best online interface for a shooter by far! That alone makes the game fun for me. The gameplay is largely unchanged from Halo 2. But why mess up a truly winning formula right? What more did people ant to see from Halo 3? Some type of revolutionary twist??? It's still an arcade shooter so what mode would people want?
What they seemed to have done is take Halo 2, tweak it, add a few now weapons, tighten the gameplay, new maps, Next-Gen it a bit, improve the stability and matchmaking options, interface, etc...and BAM! An instant hit. And why not? Halo 2 (for what it was trying to accomplish online/multiplayer wise) was the top of it's class, bar none. If you can take that and wrap it into a nice next-ge shell with some tweaks and overall improvements without re-creating the wheel, than that's the smart and right move. I am very much looking forward to the full version and feel that it definitely has a spot in my rotation. Do I really need another slower paced tactical shooter? This game will compliment my other shooters very nicely.

I've always loved Halo, and I can see why it's the Madden of FPS- you can play however you want and have good success at it. If you want to play like a 14-year old, you certainly can. But if you want to treat it as a military shooter, using cover and advancing from point to point, you can do that, too, and do it very well. Something for everyone.
As for the beta, when I actually get in on a game (the wait times are tedious), I like it quite a bit. Yes, it feels a lot like Halo 2, but there have been a number of tweaks that really work. I love that the assault rifle is back and that dual wielding has been marginalized. I also love that every map has a plentiful supply of quality weapons- battle rifles, carbines, etc.- you can get kitted up with your optimal weapon very quickly. Love High Ground. like Valhalla and am indifferent to the snow map.

I'm actually liking it-Mr. Tactical and slow paced realism likes it. NOT for any tactical or slow paced reasons, to be sure-there's little of either. But it's a fun romp. I'll be there tonight, mixer...
