I know it´s dangerous, boys, but I started thinking tonight ... Who is my favorite sports announcer working today?

One name kept resurfacing as I did mental inventory: Max Bretos from Fox Sports World.

Bretos is very, very knowledgable about soccer but doesn´t shove that wisdom down viewers´ throat. He´s also funny, too: What other announcer have you heard work in a funny reference to Steve Perry and the sappy Journey song "Don´t Stop Believing" into a sports broadcast? Bretos also has an enthusiasm and passion for the game that rises with his nearly pinpoint rises and falls in inflection and tone.

That does it: Max Bretos is my favorite sports announcer working today in either TV or radio.

Who is yours?

Take care,

Im not a White Sox fan, but John Rooney who is the White Sox radio announcer is my current favorite. Ed Farmer who accompanies him in the booth isnt bad either. But of all the different announcers Ive heard through the Midwest John Rooney is my definately favorite.

I believe he is still doing some football too.

John Motson. Hands down.

No doubt, Erinie Harwell followed by Curt Gowdy.
Forgot about Motty! He´s great, but I like Martin Tyler even better in England.

Bretos is still the king, though!

This is not a regional bias... but I grew up listening to Brad Sham (he does some national stuff now)...

I´m also a huge fan of Bob Jenkins, but that may be my racing bias... plus Bob is just a super nice guy.

Now if you were to start a topic about which announcers would I turn DOWN the sound... that would be dangerous.

My favorite sports announcer on TV all time has to be Keith Jackson. I love the man´s voice!

Bigtime bias here, but I grew up listening to Bob Murphy call Mets games. I think he´s a broadcast God.

I love Jerry Remy from the Red Sox telecasts, but I get the feeling Fox or ESPN is gonna snatch him up soon. My favorite though has to be Gil Santos, he´s so good that when I´m watching a Patriots game I mute the TV and crank the radio to listen to him.

I like Sean Mcdonough. He was great on CBS and now ABC doing some college football games. I got a chance to hear him do some Red Sox games and I think he´s really good, great excitement mixed in with good commentary. He isn´t being used as much when he was the #1 college football guy for CBS and the #2 man for college hoops. Now he´s just a ACC announcer for ABC, getting the 4th best college football game.

For the soccerati amongst you, you could try either John Motson (BBC) - never lost for an item of outstanding trivia, or Ron Atkinson (ITV), whose ability to conjure phrases from nowhere is legendary.
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
How long do you think it will be before Big Ron is back in management now that Kev and El Tel are back on the touchline?
Good to see you, man! Thanks for stopping by.

Corso is good. Informative, opinionated, funny. The entire ESPN Gameday crew -- Fowler, Corso and Herbstreit -- is excellent.

What, me flame away? Nah, they´re just scrappin´, as Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) said about Ned Braden and his wife, Lilly, arguing in "Slap Shot."
I think BFR is past management now..he earns a very fair whack with ITV, and will pick up more now that El Tel has gone to Leeds...Ron will thus cover all the Champions League games.
Couldn´t agree with you more on Phil Simms. He´s excellent, and it really irritates me when people put Madden and Theismann ahead of Simms in the talent and effectiveness derby.

Madden offers nothing to the telecast but lowest-common-denominator schtick.

Theismann knows the game and offers decent insight, but his constant need for airtime and repeated references to his playing days -- which ended 15 years ago, for Christ´s sake -- are annoying as f*uck. The guy´s ego is too big for a two-man booth, let alone a three-man booth. I feel sorry for Maguire at times.
