Ferrari F355 Challenge for PS2

Post by Apexshaver »

F355 Challenge is coming out for PS2 this week. Since I never owned a dreamcast I never got to play it, but I heard it is one of the best true simulations there are. Should I be getting excited? What have you heard about the port to PS2, better or worse? pk500, I am interested in your comments, I bet you know all about it.

Apex:

I believe that the PS2 version is almost a straight port of the DC version, with another mode added.

If that´s the case, buy it immediately. F355 for the DC is still the best driving sim I´ve ever played on a console.

I´ve deliberately avoided reading too much about this title, as it´s one of the few games that I´ll really miss now that I´m an exclusive Xbox owner.

Seriously, buy this game right away. In-f*cking-credible.
PK,

Any chance that you´ll ever break your console monogamy and go for another system (say, the beautiful PS2)?
Nope. If I return to the PS2, it will occur after I sell my Xbox.

I can´t justify the expense of sustaining two or more consoles.

Can´t see that happening now. But then again, I never thought I´d buy a Dreamcast or Xbox, either!

The Dreamcast version was the first game that I thought had better physics than Viper Racing. I will definitely be picking it up.

One question about this game- does anyone know if the Force Feedback wheel is supported for PS2? I loved this game in the arcade, especially because of the 3 screens (which provided excellent periferal envelopment) and the superb force-feedback in the wheel. Not to mention the realistic clutch.

I rented it... not had much gameplay time yet, but it works with my Logitech GT3 wheel nicely. Wheel support is mentioned specifically in the manual, and it is obvious from the manual and the in-game configuration of the wheel that wheel suppoort was built in as part of the game, not as some secondary addition.
How does it stack up the DC version? Straight port?

It is pretty much a straight port, at least as far as realism, tracks, modes etc. This game is just as hard as the DC version. Not for the faint of heart! I think there is one extra mode added over the DC version (can´t remember what it is called.)

Checkout Jcalvert´s take. He posted one at calvertgames.com

The DC version looked better. This version looks great though, and worked very well with my wheel. Sadly, I didn´t get a lot of time with it during my rental. I´ll probably wait until it goes on 5 or 7 day rental and get it again. It´s not on my must-buy list right now. Busy with a couple of RPGS, Madden, Hitz 2003, and getting psyched for Pro Race Driver and NHL 2K3.

This is pretty much the same as the DC version, but it has one new feature, the "great driver challenge". There is no analog gas/brake using the Dual Shock II.

No analog gas and brake? You´ve GOT to be kidding me! How can it be an accurate driving simulation with no analog?

>>>There is no analog gas/brake using the Dual Shock II<<<

Are you sh*tting me? This can´t be true. I don´t own a PS2 anymore, but this would be a game-killer for me if I did.

Analog gas/brake is mandatory for a game this challenging. I couldn´t even imagine playing this game on the DC without the analog triggers for gas and brake.

What the f*ck was Sega thinking with the PS2 version?

I have been playing in Novice mode so far, (without braking assistance), and decided to try intermediate mode with NO assists. Yep, the car is pretty much undrivable with ON or OFF gas and brake. Well, at least I should have my Driving Force wheel on Tuesday...
