<BR>
<BR>
<BR>SCEA announces that official stand-alone USB headsets for the PlayStation 2 are now available in North America.
<BR>
<BR>Sony Computer Entertainment America has today announced the North American release of the official PlayStation 2 USB headset.
<BR>
<BR>Priced at $29.99, the headset incorporates a number of enhancements over those previously available, including a new sleek design, a higher quality boom microphone, volume controls, and a mute button.
<BR>
<BR>"We´ve seen firsthand how voice technology can enhance gameplay, providing consumers with a dynamic experience and a more intuitive way to interact with the game, as well as other gamers when it comes to online play," said Ami Blaire, director of product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "With the launch of the stand-alone USB headset, we´ve opened the doors for our first- and third-party developers to incorporate voice technology in new and creative ways with the [ultimate] goal of providing our consumers with a completely immersive experience."
<BR>
<BR>Today´s announcement coincides with the release of SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs, which supports the headset for both single-player and online multiplayer gameplay.
<BR>
<BR>A number of other games with headset support are already available, and those confirmed for release before the end of the year include NCAA March Madness 2004, ESPN College Hoops, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, Tom Clancy´s Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm, The Sims: Bustin´ Out, and Manhunt.

Is this good, or are there better 3rd-party options?

I have the Logitech $40 one. It´s okay and has a little box and then a long cable. No volume control but it does have the noise-canceling mike. A lot of games have volume and mute controls in software but some don´t.
<BR>
<BR>The only other headset marketed for the PS2 is a Datel one, also $30 but without the noise-cancellation mike or the volume control.
<BR>
<BR>Supposedly, USB headsets for PCs will also work and you can get some around $25 but they´re unknown Taiwanese brands.

Has anyone picked this up yet? Is it any good? I´ve been meaning to get a headset for the PS2, but I´ve been waiting until the Sony one came out to look for comparisons.

I´m in no rush to pick this up because I have the Logitech Headset that comes with SOCOM. However, it´s very flimsy and you really have to handle it with care.
<BR>
<BR>I may pick up one of the 1st party headsets, but not until this one breaks (if that happens).

I have it, and if you don´t have one yet, this is the one to get. If you have the Talknet one, trade up if you plan on playing SOCOM. Talknet won´t work. The mute and volume control make it a must, in my book. It´s also very comfortable...
