What´s your Game of the Year so far?

Post by pk500 »

OK, it´s only August, and we´ll see a ton of great games in the next four months as the holidays approach.

But what has been your favorite game released this year, regardless of genre?

Mine still is World of Outlaws 2002 for the PS2, with NFL 2K3 for the Xbox as a very close second.

How about you guys? Remember, it has to be a game that was released this year.

The best new game I´ve played this year is Halo for the Xbox, but that was released last year.

Take care,

OK, Paul, I´ll get into this one, too. As of now, my favorite release of 2002 is NHL 2K2 for the good old DC. Not necessarily because it blows every other release out of the water, but because it provides two things: 1. An effective antidote to EA´s "Hockey", and 2. It shows that programmers can do an effective job creating a pretty good simulation of hockey - it doesn´t have to be played at warp speed to be an engrossing hockey experience.
I´d also like to mention NFL 2K3 for the PS2. I´m really getting into this. Finding some flaws here and there, but I am finding myself getting more and more into this each time I play. Don´t mean to waffle, but I think these two are my favorites for slightly different reasons.

I´d have to say World of Outlaws, too. The game has lasted the longest in my collection of every game in history. I doubt I´ll ever sell it. My friend who rips into every game has called it "flawless." He said "This is the only game that I can´t complain about, it´s all on me." It´s got great graphics, unbelievable physics, and is flat out fun to play. The only gripe I have is that it´s 2 player and not 4 with the multitap.

Gators:

I agree, wholeheartedly. It´s really the only game I miss from the PS2.

My only beef about WoO is the occasional slowdown. It does mess with your rhythm on certain tracks, especially when exiting Turn 2 and driving under the bridge at Williams Grove.

I can only imagine how great WoO would have been on the Xbox. Triggers for precise gas and brake, no slowdown, better graphics ... Oh, man, makes me sad to think it´s never coming to the ´box.

I think my early favorites go to NFL2K3 and The Mark of Kri. I have thoroughly enjoyed the two titles.

Wow, that is a tough one. If I had to pick one I would choose Medal of Honor: Allied Assault for the PC. Eternal Darkness, Madden 2003, NCAA 2003, HH2003 PC, MLS Extratime, WoO, and Virtua Fighter 4 are all right there though.

It´s hard not to say High Heat 2003. That game is simply amazing when it comes down to how realistic it plays. Still boggles my mind in this day of your generic games that something can be made that plays like a old school baseball video game but at the same time has the realism of a next gen game.
Nfl2k3 is close behind along with madden.
Welcome aboard, dude. HH 2003 certainly will rank high in year-end Sports Game of the Year voting.

I was stoked as hell when 3DO announced last month that it would start developing for the Xbox.

HH 2004 on the Xbox -- that will end any debate about the best baseball game on the Xbox next spring.

The Mark of Kri is definitely up there, also a very new release The Thing is contending thus far.

Duke Nukem Advance kicks too. Maybe if I would play the European import of Shenmue 2 on the DC, I´d add it to the list since I´ve owned the thing for months and never played it.

Forgot to mention NFL 2K3. I love the 2K series, just seems more exciting to me, less floaty player control and now with the addition of sliders, all the better.

[ This message was edited by: turismo67 on 25-08-2002 09:12 ]

I only play sports games so my list is very limited. But here´s my top 5:

1. High Heat 2003. while not the prettiest is far and away the most realistic baseball game on any system.

2. NFL 2K3 (XBox) I´m hooked.

3. NHL 2K2 (Dreamcast) the most realistic hockey game out there. The puck physics in this game is amazing. The AI is sensational. The speed is just right as well.

4. NBA 2K3. (XBox) Sega Sports owns roundball the way EA used to own football.

5. Madden 2003 (XBox) While a little more forgiving than 2K3, but still a nice game.

Is it just me, or are the games that are on multiple systems better looking and better playing on the XBox?

What´s up guys? Visited the site and liked what I saw. I´ll jump in with my first post on this one.

My pick is Morrowind. I can´t put the game down. NFL 2k3 hasn´t budged it from the tray of the ´box. Maybe once football season swings into full gear it will get more attention.

Morrowind is the game I´ve waited for a long time. Finally a game where you have total freedom and have choices on what quests to do. I haven´t been this involved in a non-sports game ever.
Welcome aboard and thanks for the kind words. Are you JOsborne from the Sports Reviewers´ Forum? If so, good to see you, dude!

I´m not an RPG guy at all -- don´t see the merit of them at all. But I rented Morrowind one night on a lark and thought it was cool as hell for the exact reasons you mentioned.

I praise RPG´s about as often as Rosie O´Donnell ignores the dessert tray, so consider that a high compliment from me to Morrowind!

Stick around, JOZ, and post often!

PK-

One in the same. Got into it a little with ol´ Sup there and have just kinda been lookin in every once in a while.

I´ve had the occasional interest in RPG here and there. Most end my interest in the same way though, there´s just one main storyline and it gets old. There´s just so many things to do in Morrowind.

Yeah, this is a tough one. Its been a great year for games.

In no particular order I would have to nominate:

-Nascar 2002 (pc): I race in an on-line league and its the most fun I´ve ever had playing video games, bar none.

-GTA III (pc): this one actually came out this year. The freelook replacing the flawed targeting system from the PS2 version makes this game all that much more incredible.

-Eternal Darkness (GC): fantastic story. One of the few games since System Shock 2 that made me want to play to see what would unfold next.

-High Heat 2003 (PS2): I´ve grown a little tired of the series since I´ve been playing it for 4 years straight on the PC, but there is no denying that the 2003 PS2 version is the best one yet and one hell of a baseball game.

-Home Run King (GC): I´m in a very, very small minority on this one but this game to me is just damn fun. I´m well aware of the games flaws but that doesn´t slow me down with this one. Its very rare that I´m still playing a baseball game in September, but this game continues to challenge and to be an absolute blast while its doing it.

Madden 2003 (PC): accelerated clock, 1024X768 resolution makes playing from the long cam amazing, and 100-point A.I. sliders make this superb. Turn down the QB accuracy to 0 and watch your QB practically thow it in the stands. Madden has never done that in the past and it finally offers a fairly good solution to the wr catch in triple coverage problems of the past. I love NFL 2k3, but this years PC version of Madden has really sucked me in. Thank goodness I haven´t found those money plays yet............

Super Mario Sunshine (GC): Ok, so this game is only one week old. I would usually not nominate a game for goty after only one week. This is one of those games though like GTA III where I can wander around for hours and not actually accomplish anything, having fun the whole time. On top of that, the further I get into the game, the more fun its become. Anyone who calls this a kiddie game hasn´t sat down with it long enough......this is one tough cookie.

Ok, I´ve gone on long enough with this one.

Damn PK, your right. It just seems like it was released this year, time flies when your having fun. I guess I will have to add Home Run King to my list then. IMO very underrated baseball game, with lots of fun factor.
