So, people who have the game and have traditionally soured on GTA/Rockstar games: does GTA V break that cycle?

Have never finished a GTA game; I'll finish this one, without a doubt.

The characters, especially Michael and Trevor, are FAR more interesting and compelling than previous characters. The story is well done, and the game is just tighter.

I have a love/hate relationship with this game.

I just wish that the dev's had put as much emphasis on improving the combat, map interaction, driving controls, interface, etc... as they did for increasing the scope, city, characters, etc...

I'm actually a bit shocked at some of the UI stuff that hasn't changed or improved over the last couple versions.

Holy cow, I think the driving and combat are pretty significantly improved...ESPECIALLY over GTA 4. The map interaction, however...flat sucks. I cannot understand why in the world there wouldn't be at least a GPS voiceover, but, better, put the big yellow line on the streets. How hard is that?

To echo what Teal said I get bored with these games within a day but not this one and I can't give you a reason why. I do wish you could fail a mission and still move on in the game. It seems odd to me that this isn't a feature in the game by this point but I like it a lot.

Same. I never finish GTA games, and were it not for digging back into Last of Us after only getting about 40% through when I first bought it, I'd still be playing this one constantly.

I always restart GTA games and get lost, blob around and get bored and quit. But I am still on my initial save file on this one, and have no desire to do anything other than see what the next heist/story brings to the table.

I'll add my vocal chords to the chorus praising this game. Remarkable entertainment.

Yeah...I normally get sick and tired of these games about a week or two in. This time, no way. There is just so much more to do than previous games. Last night I had about 2 hours to kill before bed and I hopped on hoping to progress a bit through the story. Well...that didn't work out so well. I decided to do a few side missions and then I got motivated to open up the whole map by driving around and removing the cloud. Yeah, two hours of driving isn't all that fun, but I came across some interesting people and it just was relaxing. I've rarely said that about a GTA game.

So yeah...it's good.

I just got the credits. Assuming that there isn't some "after credits" stuff a la RDR, that was one helluva ride, story-wise. I did some side stuff along the way, but mostly kept to the story. Can't wait for next week and GTA Online. I'm gonna go play some golf, tennis, darts, and engage in some races now...

Awesome, thanks for the impressions. Normally I would not be so hesitant about such a praised game, but I was one of those few who couldn't get into Red Dead Redemption. GTA V really does sound awesome and I'm ready for a new game.

Fear not, Brando. RDR bored me to the point of needing hallucinogens, an exception to the rule of RDR love around here. Yet GTA V thrills, compels, captivates and entertains every time I put the platter in the drive. Fantastic game.

Interesting perspective from Rockstar about why GTA V Online was delayed. I'm sure building server infrastructure also played a big part in the delay:

I was personally happy to see them delay the online stuff. When I purchase a game, I want to play the story in SP first, and it aggravates me to no end when I get invite after invite to play the MP while I'm trying to get through the SP. This way, I was able to comfortably complete the story portion of the game, and still have plenty to do in the SP world, but can now enthusiastically dive into the online world.

This was a brilliant move on Rockstar's part.

So I took launch day off to play GTA V when it came out a couple weeks ago. Now my work is sending me on a business trip Tuesday through Thursday so I am going to miss the on-line launch and the first mahem with my DSP Crew. My wife was quick to say "Karma!"... can't really argue with that one. :)

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I'll be missing the online launch myself.
