Fantastic atmosphere, with a lively group of Poles, Kazakhs and Ukrainians since the card included fighters from those nations. You'll never find a more diverse, international and interesting sporting crowd in the U.S. than at a boxing match.
We had great seats. Sixth row, center ring. Just $45 each. In fact, look at the head of the fighter in the green trunks below. Then look to your right. The bald f*ck wearing glasses and a royal blue golf shirt is me, in a heaven mixed with cigars, alcohol, friends and the Sweet Science.

I always thought the first time you would get on HBO would be a 24/7 involving training my son.

That would be cool as hell, Jack-diggity. I would be proud. But Dom is going to need someone with WAY more knowledge and skill than me!

Way cool Paul! Never been to a live fight myself, but would love to.

I've been to a handful, Steve. An electric experience unmatched by any other live sporting event. Such a unique, cool crowd. All genders, races, socio-economic classes, amounts of clothing and states of sobriety.

An exciting bout between Martinez-Chavez Jr. Being older and after being saved by the bell I was wondering whether Martinez' reputation was on the line but what a fast and furious finish it was. He had control of the fight especially the early rounds but Chavez Jr surely gave him a scare in the 12th. No controversy among the judges in the decision, (thank goodness) I am a big Martinez fan. Good bout.

Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado was brutal! Alvarado ain't undefeated anymore. Great fight!

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
Fantastic fight. Very reminiscent of Rios' performance against Urbano Antillon, in which he was behind on the cards when he knocked out Antillon. I can't believe two judges had the fight tied and one had Rios ahead at the stoppage. I had Rios down, 4-2.
Do you think Pat Russell stopped the fight too soon, Jack-diggity? I thought it might have been early. There was so much punishment in that fight. I'm not sure what Russell saw that was so much more brutal than the previous six rounds. I'm not bloodthirsty, but Alvarado's hands were up and he was trying to avoid the shots with head movement when Rios was tagging him. But Alvarado also was attempting no counterpunches, so I can see why Russell stopped the fight.
Plus there was little argument from Alvarado or his corner immediately after the stoppage. The whelping only started during Max Kellerman's post-fight interview, with the excuse instinct started to kick in for Alvarado after his head cleared.
I would LOVE to see a rematch of this bout.

I thought it was a good stoppage. Alvarado couldn't seem to get his left up to protect himself from the bombs Rios was tagging him with at the end. I also had Rios down 4-2. I definitely want to see a rematch.

Extremely sad news.
Macho was shot about 10 minutes from my home in Bayamón.
Macho had his demons, so what happened would not surprise anyone in Puerto Rico, but he was beloved down here.
Apparently it's just a matter of time 'till he's officially gone.
RIP to our CHAMP.

Pretty sad as I was a huge Macho fan along with the other great fighters of that era, like Boom Boom Mancini, Sugar Ray, Tommy Hearns, Marcin Hagler, Aaron Pryor. That"s when I was into Boxing.
Sad news indeed and what could have been if Hector had stayed clean during his Glory days. The prognosis is not looking good. I just read on ESPN that his family is going to consider taking him off life support.

Fox Sports wrote a great tribute to Hector:
"Reflections on his career have begun, and we'll begin with this one: We have lost one of the greats. When we look back at his career, the one thing that stands out is that he fought for a significant period of time, fought some of the best fighters of both his generation and all time … and managed to win nearly every time.
When you look at his prime years as a fighter, the list of guys he fought becomes all that much more remarkable: Rafael Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Edwin Rosario, Ray Mancini, Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, Roberto Duran, Vinny Pazienza, Greg Haugen, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya. Usually someone with that resume is a stepping stone on the way up or an elite level fighter who took on everyone that mattered. Camacho was the latter, of course, and it's proven by a single, astonishing fact.
He was never knocked out.
The man fought De La Hoya, Chavez and Trinidad (among others) when they were at their peaks in the lightweight division. Over 30 years, to face some of the hardest punchers in the sport, history, and never to have been stopped is a remarkable accomplishment. To go that many rounds with so many guys known for knocking out people, and lasting long enough to hear the final bell as well as listen to the judges’ scorecards, is a feat of legends.
The fact that he fought professionally for more than three decades while maintaining such a record, elevates Camacho into the upper echelon.

Fights like Andre Berto-Robert Guerrero remind me why boxers are the bravest athletes on Earth -- by far -- and why boxing is the greatest sport on this planet. Astonishing fight Saturday night.
If you have lost faith in boxing's ability to inspire, amaze and entertain, watch this fight on HBO GO or at 8:30 a.m. (ET) Sunday morning.

Look at Berto's face. HOLY. LIVING. F*CK. The man fought essentially blind the last three rounds:

Macho's family is now disputing whether to bury his body on Bayamon, PR (his hometown) of NY (grew up).
The media down here was covered this like a novela which is horrific if you ask me.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
I like both JMM and Pacquiao for their boxing abilities and personalities. But I do hope that this is their last fight with each other and move on. Pacquiao had a little taste of what Marquez has felt in their last bout. Is Manny pissed enough at his last robbery of the century where he'll knock Marquez down in a statement fight? Unlikely, as this fight may mean more to Marquez's legacy and was able to connect quite well last time they fought.
It should a be a dandy again.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
I'm not buying into the narrative that Marquez will be more reckless or aggressive in this fight because he sees it as the only guaranteed strategy to win. Marquez believes that he won all three fights, so why would he abandon counterpunching as his main tactic?
This will be an even more tactical fight than the third bout. These guys know each other so well, and I also think they're at the points in their respective careers in which neither will roll out any new tricks.
So this fight will be close, just like the first three bouts. But I doubt it will be anywhere near as exciting as the first two simply because neither guy is going to take a ton of chances.
Pacquiao will take this in a close unanimous decision. Probably 7-5 in rounds, 8-4 at most.
Finally, I also don't think Pacquiao is stressed about his legacy hanging in the balance in this fight -- because it's not. Pacman and the rest of the world knows he was screwed against Bradley. He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer and all-time great even if he loses this fight. Plus he'll still remain one of the two most bankable fighters in boxing even if he loses this fight by a close decision, and he will fight again. If he loses this bout, Pacquiao's record against Marquez still will be 2-1-1.
