Coincidentally, an analyst this week predicted that by the end of the decade, the PS3 would edge out the X360 and the Wii in the console race, in large part because Blu-Ray would win the format war. The prediction was that all 3 consoles would have market shares in the 30s so it would be a very close win.

But it's been less than a year since the PS3 and Wii have been released. We've not seen the first price cuts yet nor have the big games which are expected to move consoles yet been released. BTW, there was a report last week that Rockstar was struggling with the X360 version of GTA4 because they couldn't assume all X360 consoles would have hard drives and they were running up against the storage capacity of DVD.

Sportdan is right though, there's no real compelling reason to buy a PS3 now. There's more likelihood of a price cut (recent reports that Sony's been able to get better yields of the blue-laser pick ups used in the drives) later and of course, some big games are due later this year.

The only reason to get it sooner rather than later would be to get a model which still has the PS2 chips in it for backwards compatibility. It's expected that the US will eventually get software backwards compatibility, just like Europe.

Of course, sports games start coming out in July. But there's also the cooler 65 nanometer chips due as well. Not to mention eventual rumble.

There are a couple of big Blu-Ray movie releases due in the summer, the first two Pirates of the Carribean movies and Cars. But they'll always be there and you would think Sony will release Spiderman 3 to Blu-Ray day and date with the DVD this Holiday season. They still haven't released Da Vinci Code in Blu Ray but did release Casino Royale, which was a big seller.

Yeah, I think you nailed it for yourself. But before you buy, take a breath, go search this forum for the many posts you made showing your excitement over the PSP, and then look at what you posted later on.

Shiny, Black and New only lasts for so long.

I'd assume you'd purchase your PS3 from Wal-Mart? :D

Which means squat, An analyst last week predicted the Wi would be in short supply until 2009, many others on PS3 price cuts etc. Quoting an analyst about the outcome of this generation is about as reliable as shaking a magic 8 ball.
But it's been less than a year since the PS3 and Wii have been released. We've not seen the first price cuts yet nor have the big games which are expected to move consoles yet been released.
As a PS3 owner could you tell me what these big system seller titles are going to be? I would sure like something to look forward to. Right now besides lair I'm not excited about much.

Do you have a link for this, I would love to read it.

I disagree, the reason is Blue Ray.

I was relying to Sport73's prognostications so a relatively well-known analyst for the market making a prognostication of his own is relevant.

As for big-selling titles, I'm not referring only to PS3 titles. Certainly would include Halo3, GTA4. For PS3, I'm looking forward to Lair, Heavenly Sword, possibly Ratchet, possibly Drake's Fortune. I'm not that into the series but they're still showing MGS4 for November. Out of these, only MGS4 is well-known. But rather than a single title, I think having all these exclusives will make the platform attractive. Of course there will be multiplatform games like Assasin's Creed and the sports games.

X360 and Wii certainly will have their own exclusives which may not be well-known yet.

Here is the GTA4 rumor. I thought there was another source besides a Playstation magazine but maybe not.

The tone of disdain in my first reply was not to you, but to analyst in general. As I said I would put more faith in a magic 8 ball.

As someone who used all of these same arguments to hold off buying until a couple of weeks ago, I'll throw in another 2 cents (though I know you weren't speaking to me...). By the way, I was damn proud of myself for holding out so long. Usually I'm one of the guys in line on opening night...
sportdan30 wrote:Still priced at $100 more than it should be. Sure, I've toyed with purchasing one, and I've even thought of selling my 360. But then I think about it.
I agree, but I finally caved when Costco came out with the $699 bundle. I would have bought MotorStorm and the extra controller anyway, and this way I saved a few bucks.

Also, comparing cost/value with the XBOX360 is getting interesting. Just taking into account HD and Online, I had to buy a component cable ($50) and XBOX Live Account ($50) to get up and running with the 360. The PS3 allows me to use the PS2 component cable I already had, and on-line play is free. So for me the cost of the 360 was $499, not $399 to get it where I wanted to be for graphics and on-line play. Add another $100 for an extra controller and a game (what I got in the bundle), and you are now up to $599. That's $100 less than what I paid for the PS3, but I also get a Blu-Ray player which is amazing in my eyes.
sportdan30 wrote:XBL blows PS3 online out of the water (downloads, the arcade, easier access in terms of friends list, much better and proven interface, etc.). Yeah, the PS3 online is free, but it's cr*p right now. Plus, the majority of DSP folk own the 360. But, I guess you might keep the 360 also?
Yeah, as someone who is keeping his 360 too, this doesn't bother me much. Having spent a couple of weeks playing MotorStorm and Resistance on-line, I don't agree that on-line is cr*p.
sportdan30 wrote:I love the comments people say about the PS3. It's quiet. Shhh, guess what? Turn up your 5.1 surround sound when you're gaming on the 360, and tell me if you still hear it's engine. Or better yet, don't play the 360 in the room next to where your kids are sleeping.
I knew people would have an issue with the noise argument, and I understand. For me, though, I've always been this way and I'm not going to change. I all of my electronics and appliances to be QUIET. Also, I have a small house, and no room for a 5.1 sound system. I play games at a low volume level most of the time, and don't like it when the system is louder than the game. Oh, and our house is so small that every room is right next to where the kids are sleeping!
sportdan30 wrote:The 360 controller is built a heck of a lot better and nicer(you even said it, it has rumble). I can't imagine playing a driving game or a shooter without it. I could be wrong, but isn't a rumble controller on the horizon for the PS3? It's not packaged with the system yet.
Yep, 360 wins the controller competition, but I will say that the PS3 controllers need to be charged a lot less frequently with the lack of a rumble feature, so that's something...
sportdan30 wrote:There have been complaints about how poor some the framerates are in games compared to the 360. So, why again would someone buy the PS3 game that has a poorer framerate than the 360?
I had to read that statement twice because I've found the opposite to be true. Myself and others who have seen the PS3 in action at my house all comment on how much better the framerates are on it. (MotorStorm, Resistance, and I rented Street). So I disagree here. I will say that the textures in GoW are much better than Resistance, but the framerate is a constant 60fps in all the games I have played so far and I love it.
sportdan30 wrote:Graphically it's on par or even worse than the 360. Where is Kill Zone by the way? Everyone bitches about MS and the 360s breaking down, but does anyone question Sony and their comment about how the 360 isn't true next gen?
Disagree. On par yes, but not worse. Textures are better on GoW than Resistance, but the levels in Resistance are more expansive and there is a heck of a lot more going on. Bit of a tradeoff, but in no way does this make the graphics worse. Both systems look great in high-def, but I do not get the impression that one system is inferior to the other. They each have their strengths and weaknesses that even out in my opinion.
sportdan30 wrote:Blu-Ray is great, but the damn movies are priced way too high right now. DVD still overshadows HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, so why make the leap right now? The Blu-Ray movie prices will come down eventually. Heck, I'm even hearing that it's pretty even when it comes to comparing HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Imagine that.
Agree, agree, agree. Kind of wish I hadn't bought a couple of Blu-Ray discs just to see what the hype was about, because they look damn good. But I don't expect to be buying any more until they become the standard (IF they become the standard at all). Still, will be fun to rent them!
sportdan30 wrote:Sure, the 360 has it's problems with breaking down, and it's an inconveinence when you have to send it in for repair, but guess what....YOU HAVE A LIFE outside of video games. I think you can get by without it for a week. Or better yet, next time buy the in store warranty.
No problems with my 360 yet, knock on wood...
sportdan30 wrote:MLB The Show just might be a smash hit, but I'm betting it'll be even better and prettier next season. The season is 30 or so games in, and the Cardinals suck. I can wait til next year to play this game. That's just me though. I burn out on baseball video games after 40 or so games in to my season.
I'm a huge baseball fan and play baseball games year-round, so I'm really pumped for The Show.
sportdan30 wrote:Just out of curiousity, what other games are you interested in purchasing that's solely on the PS3?
None at the moment, but my game library is pretty small to begin with. I think I have 3 games for the Wii, 5 for the 360, and 2 for the PS3. I usually only buy the best games and then play them for a long time. Besides, now that I have all of the platforms, exclusivity is a non-issue.
sportdan30 wrote:All this said, I will buy the PS3...just not right now. Sure, it has it's allure. Shiny and black. And new! But, it just doesn't make sense right now. 600 clams, along with 60 bones for a game, and I'm guessing an extra controller, a set of component cables or whatever, and you're looking at almost the price of a Macbook! Sorry sorry, I love my Macbook. Anyways, how much time in your day, your week, your month, do you have to play the PS3, along with the Wii?
I agree, and these final points are valid. All I can say is that the PS3 has exceeded my expectations and I do not regret my purchase.

Actually, Microsoft gives you a component cable with the $399 system. On the other hand Sony thinks you're going to go out and buy a $599 HD Gaming / BR Movie player and hook it up with composite cables so that's all they put in the box. 8O

This is just flat out wrong. You don't need to buy a cable with the 360, you do however need to buy an HDMI or component cable with the PS3.

While I would prefer Gold membership to be free, I find paying $10 a month for a service which is IMO 100 times better then the PS3 online experience a non issue.

I won't comment on the rest, because the fact you think you need to buy a cable for the 360 put some doubt in my mind on the rest of your post.

I'm afraid I have also had to cave in to the PS3, and for probably different reasons for you guys - region free.

As it stands, the PS3 is the only way I am going to get next gen baseball, gridiron (NCAA - Madden always comes out in the UK) and similar titles.

Plus it'll go with my new HDTV (yes, it's finally making inroads over here), after my three year old, no longer made, 36" CRT Toshiba had an 'accident'. which brought down the amount i had to fork out somewhat.

I work really hard to make sure my glutes are firm thanks for noticing :)

No hard feelings. I disagree with much of what you said, but I bought a PS3 so I can't be the brightest bulb.

I just think the PS3 online experience at this point is horrible and I'm not a firm believer in Home either. But from a technical stand point the PS3 is a vastly better engineered machine then the 360.

Thanks. I wasn't trying to sway anyone to the PS3, just offering another opinion for those people who are on the fence and looking for real-world feedback rather than media hype.

I should also point out that I am not a typical on-line user, so the shortcomings don't bother me as much as others. I like on-line as a break from the vs. CPU play that I tend to stick with. I don't use voice chat since people on Live or PSN just piss me off. I just want to jump in, run a few races against real people - or shoot a few people, and jump out. So far the PS3 has been just fine for that. I'm not as "social" as the majority seem to be, so I can see where you are coming from with regards to Live vs. PSN.

Never use the facts or my own words against me! You bastard!

I will conduct that search now, as it will be sort of funny...

Even funnier (since I sold my PSP with no regrets) is that I'm thinking I'll need to get one again after I have a PS3. YES, I HAVE A PROBLEM.

Conducted the search, and don't feel too foolish having read my thoughts. The PSP is a damn nice device that is STILL striving to find games that make it a worthwhile alternative to desktop offerings. The only gripe I ever had with the hardware was the feel of the control 'nub' and the fact that there weren't 2.

I mentioned that the PS3 might prove attractive, and that IF it did I would likely end up owning all 3 consoles, so I'm mostly consistent.

SHINY, BLACK, NEW...Mmmm.

QUESTION: Can you see/send cross-game invites on the PS3? Even if just one person in the XMB and the other in game. Is there any way to get a 'message' to them to say 'hey, let's play!' ?

My online gaming is mostly just Rally and I hooking up to duel it out on the latest sports release, often pre-determined timing via phone. So, it's not a deal breaker but it's nice to be able to spot someone online and ask for a game. I presume this is NOT yet supported...Just curious.

I've only had mine a little over a week so I'm not positive but I think you can only get messages from the XMB.

My office has a PS3 & 360 in our conf room. A couple guys played Resistance for a few days when it came out. It's been all 360 ever since. One day, they moved the 360 to a different floor, and no one even fired-up the ps3. Odd.

ps-I see so many people saying they're buying/bought a ps3 just for the show. What if it sucks? Yikes...

They will have a blu-ray player and a gaming system that is tecnologically superior to the 360....Not such a bad thing.

Seriously... I doubt anyone that buys one will lose in the long run...

I will get one eventually...

I just think I need an HDTV first ...and then I need to wait for some games to come out for it (next idiot that mentions Motorstorm gets a visit from the suck my cock you dumb mother f***er fairy)...

1. Pretty sure that I don't agree with your assessment of the PS3 being "technologically superior" to the 360 other than BluRay being a part of every PS3. The "Cell" has more potential "on paper", but getting developers to program to this advantage might be tough, especially since the PS3 development tools are nowhere near where they need to be to accomplish such a task. Care to expand on why you feel the PS3 is "technologically superior"?

2. Agreed. However, now is not the time to invest in a PS3 when you consider the dearth of games available for it.

I bought my 360 on launch day and it's not like this launch list was anything to be all gitty about (not to say there aren't a couple good games there, but top to bottom--ehhh). And interestingly enough, 9 of these games were also on the launch list of the PS3.

Amped 3
Call of Duty 2
Condemned: Criminal Origins
FIFA '06: Road to FIFA World Cup
Kameo: Elements of Power
Madden NFL 06
NBA 2K6
NBA Live 06
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
NHL 2K6
Perfect Dark Zero
Peter Jackson's King Kong
Project Gotham Racing 3
Quake 4
Ridge Racer 6
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

The first great games didn't start hitting until the spring.

Having said all of that, it's biggest gaming issue is that most of those who already own a 360 have played these games and thus the "why buy another system to play re-hashed games" philosophy. Sony's big mistake was not being ready a year ago. If the PS3 were released even close to the 360 i don't think the pricepoint is an issue at all because it's next gen versus next gen but they have the advantage of brand loyalty and blu-ray. Problem is they are playing catch up in the gamers eye and thus the lag in sales and excitement. For many they expect MLB to get it over the hump.

I think if you walked into the store today with someone who has never gamed on anything except an original XBOX and PS2 and let them make the call based on what each unit offers, I think they have a very tough decision.

The PS3 is great if you want a Blu-ray player that you can also game on. Right now, if you want gaming only, 100% agreed, stay with the console that has had a year and a half head start in game releases.

I'd call the PS3 'technologically superior' if I don't read reports of multiple people going through multiple consoles over a relatively short period of time.

I think I've decided that when (yes, I wrote *when*) my 360 fails, if I can't get the repair for free, I'll take a long break from next-gen gaming, go back and finish the still large stack of Xbox1 and Ps2 games I have yet to beat, and then come back maybe 2008ish sometime with a PS3 if the price and games justify.

That despite me having a BLAST with the games, both 'full' and arcade, for the system. I just can't support a company that blatanty screws with its best customers.

I don't think you'll have to wait that long for a price drop. I'm seeing bundles all over the place for PS3 at this point. Extra controllers, charge kits, games and controllers. Sometimes it adds more $$ and in other cases free, like this weeks gamestop deal where you get an extra controller.

To me that's the first step in getting rid of surplus inventroy, once that stops working (if it does) you will see a price drop. I wouldn't be surpirsed if a drop occured before the end of the summer, but my bet is it will happen in Oct / Nov.

Hell the things are in large supply everywhere and there not moving, when I bought mine 3 weeks ago the EB people actually giggled when I came in and asked to buy a PS3. Sony may end up fine in the end but right now there in trouble and need something to get things going in the right direction.

QA deficiencies on MS' part don't really apply to discussions regarding technology superiority, IMHO.

The way I feel right now, once my 360 goes out of warranty (extended warranty goes through June 08 ) I will give the PS3 a long hard look. I am on my 3rd replacement 360 and have no doubt that a 4th will be needed before long.

There is no way I could use 'technical superiority' and 'Xbox 360' in the same sentence. The 360 is loud, hot and ridiculously unreliable. Every time I turn the thing off I think to myself that tomorrow could be the day it stops working. Every time I play a game like Oblivion that requires sneaking and has some ambiance, I either have to crank up the volume or wear headphones to shut out the noise of the disk drive. Every time I play a game more than 45 minutes, I have to wait 10 minutes for the disk drive to cool down before it will read any media.

But frankly, the bigger disappointment in this 'next generation' is the fact that developers are moving even slower than last generation to catch up with options in sports games. We are looking at the 2nd incarnation of NCAA and the 3rd of Madden, and the current gen games are still much more feature rich. All the talk of 60 frames a second in NCAA and Madden this year, but what they don't mention is that in NCAA they had to remove helmet reflections and downgrade the player models to reach this frame rate. And no word about 1AA teams or some of the other features that have been a part of the PS2 and xbox versions for years.

If I had it to do over again, I would have stuck current gen and maybe added a PS2 to play The Show. As it is, my favorite next gen game is Oblivion, and while I have enjoyed some of the other shooters, none were memorable enough to make them system sellers.

It's not about technical design or QA which account for the X360's reliability problems.

It's that they sourced the cheapest components possible and used the cheapest manufacturing/assembly vendor they could get.

Nothing wrong with that, all mass market products use that approach.

Perhaps Sony is having better luck because the yields for the Blu-Ray drive components are so low that they're already proven to be solid before they're built.

But later, as they try to ramp up volume and use cheaper components, those drives could be less reliable or more noisy.

Sony does use better packaging for the components on the logic board. Not sure why they spent more for this. But that's also something that could change later.

I think the PS2 slim was said to be more reliable than the original PS2 design. Maybe this time, the original PS3 will turn out to be more reliable than later PS3 designs.

It's a crapshoot though. I had rotten luck with the PSX and the Genesis before that. But PS2 was completely reliable for me for 5-6 years, although I know it was bad for a lot of other people. PS3, so far so good.

Exactly what I did.I have a load of games on my Xbox HD I haven't finished(some not even started),and I got a PS2 for the Show and the Guitar Hero soon to be trilogy.
I can still play Madden and NCAA this year on Xbox and still play MVP 05 updated,as well as the Show.
I can't drop 4 or 5 hundred bucks on a brick that quits playing its 60 dollar games.Just can't do it.
Hopefully, 2008 will bring cheaper hardware and some new gaming experiences, not the same old rehash.
