No spin. It's a complete joke. Fire Marty and hire a guy that's 53-82 lifetime as a HC. Brilliant.SoMisss2000 wrote:Norv Turner to be named Chargers coach...lol. I wonder how Charger fans and the media will spin this one when we were the laughingstock of the league when we were pursuing him.
oh and the front office hiring Cottrell to be d coordinator? Surely the GM is not supposed to hire the assistants, right?
Just another reason why the Chargers will always be the Chargers.

From Michael Hiestand's TV column today in USA TODAY:
>>>
Irvin out:
Michael Irvin, an ESPN NFL studio analyst since 2003, won't return next season. Irvin, the ex-Dallas Cowboy recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was briefly suspended by ESPN after a misdemeanor arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia in Plano, Texas, in November 2005. He was working at ESPN on a one-year deal last season and drew criticism for suggesting on ESPN Radio that Dallas quarterback Tony Romo's speed might have resulted by a maternal ancestor mating with a slave.
<<<
Thank God. The quality of ESPN's NFL analysis shows just improved 100 percent.
Take care,
PK

I'd rather they kept Irvin and got rid of that dreadful Monday night crew.pk500 wrote:From Michael Hiestand's TV column today in USA TODAY:

I'd like for both to be nuked. I'm just about over Berman, too.ScoopBrady wrote:I'd rather they kept Irvin and got rid of that dreadful Monday night crew.
At least maybe Irvin's departure will help Tom Jackson return to the superb analyst he once was instead of Irvin's Mr. Bojangles partner. If I heard that "JACKED UP!" segment one more time, I think I was going to puke.
Take care,
PK

Well, now that he got into the HoF, his work there is done. He just needed to stay in the spotlight to get that vote.
They do need to get rid of the somnorific Tirico (I'm yawming just thinking about him) and the bozo boys. They should have gone with Nessler and Vermeil (with Jaws, even) from the beginning. Idiots in charge, but hey, they want their celebrity booth visits and such garbage more than they want to cover the actual game (was that really a holding infraction, or a dubious call? We'll never know because we won't see a replay, because then we wouldn't be able to see the benched QB on the sidelines, or the celebrity in the booth).

Me, too. Those guys are football guys, not vaudeville players disguised as NFL announcers. Plus Jaws and Vermeil explained to you WHY stuff on the field was happening or anticipated it before it happened instead of just repeating what we just saw on the field.bkrich83 wrote:No doubt. I swear, most NFL analysts work as if the audience consisted of 2.5 million Helen Kellers.
I just wish more sports would take what I call the "Speed Channel" approach to coverage and assume that the viewer knows something about the sport. Speed's coverage of F1 is geared toward motorheads, and it's a delight to watch. Even if you aren't a motorhead, if you watch Speed's F1 coverage enough, you'll absorb the information and become pretty well versed on a lot of things about the sport.

Yes, PK, and the Speed boys do enough with the little Matchett's corner pieces and such to integrate newbies into the sport, and yet don't dumb down their race coverage with things like I heard yesterday from one of those guys in the booth "what he means by a green track is. . . ." Sheesh.
Maybe it's that there are so many rules changes every year in F1 that when they explain some things from the bottom up it doesn't seem so patronizing. On the other hand, I think you're exactly right in that they start with the assumption the viewer has a head on his shoulders and figure we'll catch up soon enough if we keep watching. Amazingly, that's what happens. I wish soccer PBP booths on ESPN domestic coverage could take the same approach, but there is a philosophy that must be based on an inforiority complex that you can't just tell it like it is, you have to explain the history of language with every bit of jargon. There's no doubt the MNF crew knows they are speaking to a different audience than what watches regular Sunday afternoon telecasts, but my goodness have they ever gone too far with it on ESPN.

Now it looks like the Bears won't be resigning Chico as defensive coordinator and will likely go with Babich (current lb's coach). I have to wonder if this is a move to give Lovie more money. The Bears are notiriously cheap when it comes to paying coaches and this bothers me that they aren't trying to resign both Rivera and Smith.

Its gotta be money. Cheap bastages.ScoopBrady wrote:Now it looks like the Bears won't be resigning Chico as defensive coordinator and will likely go with Babich (current lb's coach). From the Trib story, it seemed more like Smith wanting to run the defense his way, the more traditional Cover 2, whereas Rivera wanted to do more attacking with the linebackers.ScoopBrady wrote:Now it looks like the Bears won't be resigning Chico as defensive coordinator and will likely go with Babich (current lb's coach). Really disappointing news. He's a very good defensive coordinator and it sucks to see him leave.
The bears do not run a traditional cover 2...They run a traditional Tampa cover 2. Now if I only remembered what the difference was... Maybe the depth of the middle lb?Brando70 wrote:From the Trib story, it seemed more like Smith wanting to run the defense his way, the more traditional Cover 2, whereas Rivera wanted to do more attacking with the linebackers.ScoopBrady wrote:Now it looks like the Bears won't be resigning Chico as defensive coordinator and will likely go with Babich (current lb's coach). Its a lot harder to run a Tampa 2 without Tommy Harris.
Steelers release Joey Porter. Cap issues plus there was a chance he was going to be a holdout going into the final season of his contract.

I think he is still a good player but maybe not a 5 million dollar player. One of the local sports reporters said he asked Ken Whisenhunt a couple of weeks ago that if Porter became a free agent would he be interested in him and he said no, he thinks he is washed up.wco81 wrote:Is Joey still a productive player or is he on the downside?
49ers are looking for 3-4 LBs. They're supposedly interested in Adalius Thomas to use some of the cap room.
Probably can't afford to sign two LBs to big contracts.

I am not sure how to judge the Dolphins offseason so far.
Release Randy McMichael, the most prolific tight end in their history and trade Wes Welker, their leading receiver and kick returner last year (in the division no less) just to save some money. Then they go out and spend 32 mil (20 guaranteed) on an aging Joey Porter. What the hell is going on in South Beach?
