Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19

It's a convincing case, although the causation between the injury and the decreased production can't really be established given that it coincides with a summer with no meaningful break. This conclusion is along the lines of the point I made: Despite the slump, the current Harry Kane is still the ou...

Re: PlayStation Classic

Only into it if it contained quirky titles with mechanics or settings that aren't available in contemporary titles. I'm thinking of Tenchu, Armored Core and Bushido Blade off the top of my head. Playing run-of-the-mill fighting, racing games or JRPG's doesn't really appeal to me.

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19

What a game. Whoa. I still standby my statement that Kane and Salah are two of the most overrated footballers out there. They can't create a damn thing for themselves and make stupid errors. Salah almost cost Liverpool the game. Thankfully my boy Firmino came on and iced it. This is a truly crazy t...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19

Holy f*ck, what a match. Henderson and Milner were beasts in the midfield, especially in the first half. PSG came alive when DiMaria came off and Neymar moved to the middle. What drama by Firminho. Did I see Salah throw his water bottle in disgust on the bench when the guy who subbed for him scores...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19

Mane frustrating. Salah imitating him today. Still Loverpool with a great win. Who is going to win the league? 8) I hesitate to draw any conclusions from the first game back from international breaks, especially when both sides had so many players traveling. That said, 5 from 5 without having reall...

She's is in the uppermost of the uppermost of American musicians. The elite's elite. Louis, Duke, Hank, Ray, Bird, Miles. Rare air. Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19

After following soccer for the past two years, and heavily last year I am looking forward to the season of futbol waaaaay more than football this year. Can’t believe that happened but it’s true. Working from home has turned me into a huge soccer fan since I can watch all the games televised during ...

I'm sure you'll dismiss all this as basement-dwelling stat nerd wankery, but by any of these measures, traditional or innovative, Croatia made significantly more chances for themselves than France did. Listen here, love child of Billy Beane and Daryl Morey: The only metric that truly matters is the...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

it has to be called surely despite how the annoying rule is written. This is borderline insane to me. This isn't how rules work. Refs don't get to make de facto alterations to suit their needs. The only thing that makes organized sports work is the agreement that the rules are, in fact, the rules. ...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

Can anyone illuminate when VAR can and can't be used? FIFA limited VAR use to 4 circumstances: goals (which is liberally construed to include offside play leading to them), penalties, straight red and mistaken identity. I didn't watch much Serie A, but from what I've seen in the WC, I think it woul...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

Now, now, boys. Let's not start denigrating each other's intoxicants of choice. France were somewhat fortunate in the match, but it's an overstatement to say they don't deserve to be champions. The proper call on the Griezmann dive and a better break on the PK call and the it is easy to see Croatia ...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

A tough loss made harder because we so thoroughly outplayed them for long stretches. I'm fine with not being able to handle M'bappe, but them getting the breaks on the Griezmann dive and the dubious PK is frustrating in that it gave them a foothold they didn't deserve and forced Croatia on the front...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

I re-watched the France-Belgium semi as methadone to get me through to tomorrow's 3rd-place game. I think France will try roughly the same gameplan that England did against Croatia. The differences are two and they are enormous. Kante and M'bappe. M'bappe can do things 1v1 that the England forwards ...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

England's best performances all featured their WB's and wingers. They don't really have a command the center-type MF. Henderson is good at what he does, but it's more structural. He helps the team keep its shape and moves the ball quickly. Lacking the ability to match Croatia in the middle, they dep...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

Pickford did his best to save his team into PK’s. Unfortunately for England Walker and Stones went for a nap together. I said about 100x in the run-up, England are younger, fresher, faster and deeper. The only advantage Croatia had was that England are also England, and it turned out to be propheti...

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2017/18

But Kompany gets away with a penalty in front of goal which should have been a PK. That was not a PK, it went to VAR and confirmed. There was some contact but ball was already out of play. I thought the contact was minimal at best in any event and that they got that right. What a terrific match. de...

Paul, stop it. Continue your anti-Spain jihad if you must, but do not try to make this truly terrible Russia side into anything more than the garbage fire, second division bus-parkers that they are. A gaudy score against a Saudi Arabia team that shouldn't have been within 500 miles of Russia does no...
